2011 Maui, Hawai'i Trade $2 makes its Debut

Maui, the second largest of the Great State of Hawaii's Islands has long been a popular haunt in the land of Paradise due to its inviting beaches, tropical scenery and cultural activities.

In 1992 Maui's Chamber of Commerce began issuing a yearly Trade Dollar to raise funds for conservational and educational projects on the Island and in its surrounding waters. Those early Trade Dollars could be used in trade (like a silver Dollar) at participating merchants throughout the island during the year they were issued. Today those Trade Dollars have a face value of $2. Each coin measures 39mm (Crown-sized) and is composed of Copper-nickle. As such, many are not spent, but are kept as souvenirs or become a part of someone's coin collection. In the past the coins featured Dolphins, Turtles, Parrots, Triggerfish, Whales, 'Tiwi Birds, and other native flora and/or fauna.

This year the 2011 Maui Trade Dollar ($2) features a Lion Fish.

Nice coin, maybe I'll have to swing by the local coin dealer when I visit my Aunt again, who lives on Maui. I really like that place, maybe that's where I will move when I move out.

Pretty cool... I usually get these coins when I visit Maui as the aren't too expensive. I'm in Maui now and would be happy to pick one of these up if anyone wants one, just send me a PM in case I miss the thread. Might be able to get a few of the 2010 and earlier coins as well as I see them at most places as well.

I got one of these from my aunt awhile back. 2005 or 2006 I believe.

    Hi illini:

When you purchase them do they come with a COA? Most of mine from 1992 came in a special 2x2 with a COA, but lately there are no special 2x2s or COAs. Maybe COAs only are given with purchases at the Maui Chamber of Commerce.

I've been buying them for the past few years and the ones that you see in gift shops and convenience stores are in the 2x2 holders w/ the little card/COA and I believe they usually sell for a few dollars over face value, $4.95 or $5.95 I think.

The ones you get from the Chamber of Commerce office in downtown Wailuku are loose coins (in a square roll tube if you buy a full roll). I went to the office this afternoon at around 2pm (which is open from 9am-5pm) and of course the office was locked and no one was there. No one answered the phone number either... pretty typical for business in Maui :) I went back around an hour later and they were open ;) I bought 10 of the 2011 coins for $20 total and they also had 2008-2010 coins so I bought a few of each of those for face value to fill a full roll so I'd get a square tube full; otherwise it was looking like I'd have to use my pockets to take them home!
