found a coin, need info

i found this coin. its from 1789. looks like a medal. AU

on the observe side says "George Washington President of the United Sates 1789"

on the reverse side says "United States Mint Philadelphia 1792-1971"

Obviously not, with the reverse dates. That was the first year of Washington's first term, immediately following ratification of the Constitution.

It doesn't seem to be a U.S. Mint medal, as it is not listed here or here (3rd item)

It's probably from one of the many private mints that do "collectible" series. I don't see any hallmarks or engraver initials, but you should check the edge for a possible incuse inscription. If it is gold, it's worth at least the melt value - if it's just a gold-colored base metal, it probably isn't worth more than a couple of bucks.

initial says "F.Gasparro" on the right bottom side. very little.

Correction, this is a U.S. Mint Medal and is still being sold by the U.S. Mint for $2.75.

FYI, Gasparro was the engraver at the mint at the time this medal would have originally been made, in 1971.

Well, I learned a valuable lesson from this - When researching mint-issue medals, look at the pictures, not just the name. I sure didn't connect "First Coinage Bronze Medal" with the pictures in the original post, but there it is, the second item in the first link I posted.
