Thread: I inherited a coin collection

Hi all I am super new to the coin collection world. I recently inherited a coin collection and I have no idea what its worth. Its by no means a large collection. I created a list of all the coins and plan on taking pictures soon. I need to find a really good digital camera for those tiny details that are so so important.

Any ways here is my list, if anyone out there could look and see if I have anything super rare or worth alot of $$ I would really appreciate it.

If you really want to know the value you will need to post pictures of your coins, any kind of picture should do fine.

I know that that 1914 - D Lincoln cent is a key date. Depending on the condition it can be worth several hundred dollars. Do you have a clear picture of the front and back?

Those Ike dollars aren't actually silver. Only some of the proofs (S mint mark) were made in silver. That's still a pretty good pile of silver overall.

That's a LONG list of items you have there. At a quick glance nothing rare or especially valuable stood out except, as Gman pointed out, the 1914-D Lincoln Cent. Being a rare coin the 1914-D Lincoln is heavily counterfeited. A common way to fake the coin is to alter a 1944-D by changing the first '4' in the date to a '1'. The quickest way to determine if you have an altered 1944-D is determine if the designer's initials VDB are located on the truncation of Lincoln's bust. If the intials are there (or if they have been removed) the coin is most definitely NOT a genuine 1914-D Lincoln.

Also, the value of your coins will be determined by their condition. If any of your coins are uncirculated they may have some collector value. For most of the coins if they are circulated they are worth their metal content of face value (maybe slightly more).
