I'm concerned about a possible troll

lol, I guess that sounds funny since I use the handle I do, but I am serious.

Overnight I received an email originating from this website and here it is:

Thanks,

Adam
This may be completely innocent but it seems suspicious to me, so I decided not to reply directly, especially since I don't remember the comments he is referring to and I came to the CT forums to send him a PM. (this would avoid him being able to get my real email addy). When I searched the forum I found that even though AdamP is a real member he has never made a post here and I was unable to figure out a way to send him a PM. Bottom line, I am concerned that he is a troll who is phishing for email addresses. I could be wrong, but I figured I'd warn you all in case others received a similar message.

P.S. is there a way to send a PM to someone who's never posted here? I've always just done it by clicking in their handle and the dropdown box appears, but that won't work here? Thanks! TCT

ok, well I figured out how to send him a PM and it was refused by the system ("that mamber has chosen not to receive PM's"...) I think this is fairly conclusive that something is amiss here.

If not I guess my response can be posted here:

Adam, I don't remember your post off hand, but if you have a 1994 Liberty Dollar in a hard plastic case then I'm gonna guess that this is what you have:

http://i3.ebayimg.com/05/i/07/9a/56/0e_1.JPG

either that or this:

http://i11.ebayimg.com/01/i/07/91/84/30_1_sbl.JPG

If your coin is the first one (which is a business strike uncirculated coin) then it is worth about $15, and if you coin is the second coin (a proof, with highly reflctive fields and a frosty white central device) then it is worth about $175.

When you mention a "bar code enclosure" then that sounds like an aftermarket third party grading slab. That is a way to get an experts opinion of the coin's condition and to provide a good amount of protection for the coin.

Good Luck!
TCT

I have no idea if he will get my response this way, but at least my email addy isn't compromised this way.

Peter, could you look into this please? Is this guy contacting others too?

Well, this is just a person who signed up and never made a post. We get lots of those. One thing to remember is that a large percentage of folks who join up here aren't very experienced with forums, the web, or even computers. I get a lot of basic questions, how to log on, how to register, etc, etc. I'm assuming he found one of your posts, and decided for some reason that using the email function was the best way to ask his question. It seems innocent enough. Sounds like a newbie question, he's just wondering why his coin isn't matching up with your description.

No, there's no way to track if he's used the boards to email other members. We don't keep records of that. The only way to prevent someone from emailing you questions in the future is to edit that in the preferences section of the user control panel.

I do greatly appreciate people reporting anything they think is unusual. When I get emails from people asking about coins like this, I generally try to encourage them to post their question in the public forum. A lot of the time it's just because I don't think I'm the best one to answer the question, but also it's good to have the question and answers put in public view because if one person is asking, you can be sure that there are 100 others who have the same question but for whatever reason aren't going to ask. So, if you decide to keep your email open, and get question like this in the future, give them a gentle nudge to post their question in public. If your'e nervous about using your email address to reply to them, you can either forward the question on to me and I'll respond to them, or let me know and I can set you up with a throw-away gmail account to use.

You're right and I actually do want to apologize for being a jackass. I guess I'm kind of on the defensive because this is the only forum that I'm a member of that I haven't been treated like dirt on so far, so it was just a knee-jerk reaction more than anything.

Seriously, as you can tell I'm a Bronco fan and every little thing I post onto the Bronco or F-150 forum is met with nothing but insults and snide remarks. Old habits die hard, and you're right.

...by the way, I'm a huge Star Trek fan, nice coin!
