New to Coin Collecting

Hey everyone. I've just got my coin collecting interest sparked and I think im going to begin collecting. So with that said you can probably assume i don't have much of a collection. I got this one coin that I've just posted pictures of that I don't know if its real or fake. But for the main question that I have for you all is, is there a website or a cheap book that i can buy to learn the ends and outs of coin's. For instance I couldn't tell you what a mercury dime is, or what the key dates of certain types of coins are. Well I would like to learn that for free or for a cheap amount of money. And I would like to know what types of coins i should collect seeing as my interest in coins is rare US coins that aren't made anymore. I'm also really intrigued by coins that were made in the 18th century. Thanks for reading and replying if you do.

Hello Jody, and welcome to the forum. If you would like to collect rarities on a budget, I would suggest one of the branches of token collecting. Civil War tokens in particular are relatively inexpensive, with a tremendous amount of history/background, and somewhere around 80% of them have known populations of 20 or less. New cwts are still being identified as well, if you have an interest in discovering something not previously known. I have about 2 dozen unlisted cwts, and a new discovery certainly makes my day.

As Speedy posted though, collect what YOU like. Since you indicated that you are not very familiar with the various types of coins out there, I would suggest getting some exposure to the various areas, either by visiting some coin shops/shows, or even perusing different coin categories on ebay to see if anything catches your fancy. I would recommend getting some experience (and a few books) before buying many rarities though, as the rarities are more highly couterfeited.
