When gold prices rose to near 700 an ounce the mint shut down sales and raised prices on AGEs. Now that gold is down at 560 (and falling) shouldn't they be lowering the prices? We need to call the mint and ask them when they will be lowering their prices on the gold eagles to keep in line with the price of gold.

We can call till we are blue in the face but I think it is a nice dream that the Mint will ever lower a price on anything... They might lower the price again next year but we are done with price changes for the rest of the year....unless they need to raise the price again of course...

Let the invisible hand take care of it. If nobody buys them at the current price, they'll lower it without anyone telling them to. The reason it's staying high is because people expecting gold to go back up are still buying it at htat price. If they're still selling, the mint has no reason to lower it. If people stop buying it at the current price, the mint will lower it then and only then.

If you feel a need to protest the current price, vote with your wallet and don't buy them. If enough people do that, that'll force their hand faster than any other form of protest will.

They stopped selling the ounce once proofs.. either they're already sold out or they are getting ready to adjust the pirce... will have to see how it turns out.

Well they DID lower the price, from $875 to $800. Still too high. And yes the proof version is supposed to go on sale on the 22nd from the mint. Distributors will be able to order the business strikes then as well.

I am confused on this whole 50.00 thing, what will be better the proof or the BS? Will both be available from the mint and Dealers?
if so where is the best place to get a proof from?

The word "better" is very subjective. If you look at the mintages for AGEs, there is just about always a greater number of uncirculated coins compared to proof coins. So the proof coins are almost always more valuable unless there is some sort of abnormal event such as the 1999W uncirculated coins made from proof dies.

The proofs will start out costing more, and will probably end up being more valuable. It's a coin flip as to which one will be "better."

I'm inclined to wait a bit and buy the coin slabbed as MS69 or proof 69 when these become available. I think the authentication and grading is worth a few extra bucks in the long run. I always suspect that dealers pick out all of the best coins to be slabbed and sell the inferior coins raw. But that's just me.
