Another newbie

Figured I oughta say howdy or something and let y'all know theres probably gonna be a rash of questions headed your way. I'm pretty new to coins so you'll more than likely hear some of the same stuff you've heard from every other newbie.
Right off the bat I was wondering if anyone has any info on coin shows and what goes on at them. I'm thinking about going to one tomorrow (yeah, I know, nothing like waiting till the last second to go after some info. I'm that way). I'm not looking to do much other than take in the experience and maybe make a small purchase or two if there are some good buys. Anyone got any tips or tricks on what goes on at these things?
Anyhoo, I've been doing some reading around here for a bit and there seems to be quite a few really friendly, knowledgable people around here and I'm looking forward to getting to know some of you.

It's always best to Buy the book before you buy the coin, and at most mid-sized to large shows there is at least one supply and book booth. IMHO its the only table to spend money at during your first show.

Thanks

Thanks for the welcomes as well as the advice folks. I blew off the coin show though. I decided to watch the N.C.A.A. tournament instead, even though Illinois, as well as the rest of the big ten, went belly up this year.

Oh well, this is probably small as far as coin shows go, a local coin club in Fort Wayne puts it on, and there will be more. They have a show in Indy pretty regularly that I'd like to get to and Chicago isn't that far away either. I can just throw my procrastination to the wind and actually get a clue before I go to the next one.

One of the things I was really wondering about was how much trading goes on at these things and are the people there as tough to deal with as the dealers at coin shops? Basically, will people haggle? Working on a deal can be fun itself, even if it falls through, but I can't get much of anything out of dealers.

The people at the coin shows ARE the dealers in the shops. I won't say they don't haggle, they just don't do very much of it. Standard etiquette is that it is acceptable to ask the dealer what his best price would be and that's about it. Sometimes you may get away with making a counter offer, but never more than one. And if the dealer refuses, say thank you and politely walk away. That's just the way it's done.

Get over it Where I live there is a show once a year.....at least one that is worth the drive (1-2 hours)
I hear that there are some small ones but the drive is too far for them.

Hmmm - seems to me they have a show in St. Louis about once a month I'll have to ask a friend there.
