Gold state quarter collections

Can anyone tell me whether the gold state quarter collections, say from the Morgan mint, are valid. They are selling 10 gold quarters for $10 plus $10 for shipping. Are these worth collecting? Are they legal tender? As you can tell I am a begginer. thanks

The quarters are regular state quarters, legal tender, and are plated with a very thin gold (24K) layer. The Gold on these coins is only worth a few cents. Most collectors consider these "altered" coins and do not collect them, but people do collect them and they are worth what someone is willing to pay. I, and I would think almost everyone here, would not be willing to pay $1 each for these.

Hi beau,

Most serious coin collectors don't buy those.
They are "novelty" items, not collector coins.

It's up to you, but I would recommend spending that $20 on a nice coin that has some history behind it.

Good luck, and enjoy.

Oh, I see you asked about legal tender status.
Yes, I believe they can still be used as money, if you could find someone to accept them.

Also, it shouldn't cost $10 to ship a small group of coins.
Be very wary of any mail order that charges more than a few dollars for shipping and handling.
