I read that coins shouldn't be stored in PVC. Is Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) also bad for coins? That is what most pill containers are made of according to one source I found on the internet. I would like to store some of my coins in them if it's not bad for them.
It won't hurt them. But whatever medicine was in the bottles easily could. They must be cleaned thoroughly before use. But it is a simple matter, and probably a better idea to use coin tubes that are sized properly for the coins. And they are not expensive.
I was reading on Wikipedia, so it may not be 100% accurate, but it was stating that PET when exposed to heat can discolor. I wouldn't want to take a chance of that happening if I wanted to store coins in a container made of PET. I'll stick to my air-tite capsules for now
I agree that PET is not unsafe, but any chemicals that it may have contained could be very dangerous. PET can discolor, but that means the plastic itself will go from clear to cloudy in heat. It should not give off any chemicals that would endanger the coins. What used to be inside the PET bottle, though, depending on what it was, may not be even able to be cleanable with water. I would stay away unless you knew for sure how water soluable it is, and what the danger for the coins were.
