If you can see the line although weak I think it is still considered there and not a bridge. I personally have not purchased many FS slabed Jeffersons for this reason. I bought a few from different TPG services years ago to see how they graded compared to my personal standard, I guess I undergrade! I liked ANACS then PCGS & NGC started to address the steps but in MHO don't do it justice. I bought a few IGC graded Jeffersons a couple of years ago on ebay for a few dollars and was pleased with what I got and there grading I was kind of expecting over graded junk.
Again I wish all TPG's would go to a more discriptive designation other than FS or nothing.

Glaciermi, it was 60-D. It was inside the front cover of Coin World's December 5 issue. In the ad, it says that it is the only 60-D to receive the FS designation from PCGS.

I do like SEGS for step counting. I have to admit, I tend to not care much what the grade is (an EF with 5 full steps is nicer than an MS69 with 4.75), I put all the value in the steps. On the other hand I'm afraid I overgrade my steps alot. IMO 95% of my collection is still junk, and there are only 12 coins out of the series that I have that have less than 5 steps.

Old Post

I know I'm responding to an old post but varietynickel.com does not seem to exist anymore. At least my Firefox browser couldn't find it.

Nope---Mr Taylor decided that he wasn't interested in coins anymore so he took it down---I had emailed him and asked about it and the details---he is interested in selling everything but at a price I couldn't do.

varietynickel.com was a great website for Jefferson Nickels. I am still hoping someone would buy it and get it up again.

What kind of money is he asking?
He had it on E Bay once and I think the starting bid was $1000 dollars, But didn't get any bids.

2006 nickels??

Okay... I'm a bit confused about the step thing. I looked at a bunch of 2006 nickel rolls, and they ALL look like they have six full steps. The image of Monticello is new on these though, and much lower relief than the older ones. Are you counting the 2006 ones as full-step, or are they out of the race because they're new?

This is a picture of full steps -

All 6 of the steps have to be clear and distinct, if they are not then it can be a 5 step or 5.5 step. But they do not count less than 5. In my opinion, they need to count all 6 for the coin to be considered as full steps. ( to do otherwise is like saying the glass is full when it is really only almost full full ). There can be no breaks across the lines of the steps. If there is, then it counts as a 5 step or 5.5 step depending on the severity. More breaks than that and the coin does not get the designation from the TPGs.

You can read more about it - HERE

For the Jefferson series from the late 80's to date Full Steps is the norm. Try finding full step in some dates of the 40's + 50's + 60's + 70's and you've stuck gold! It's a strange thing some years full steps are common others exstremly rare or even unheard of, thats what makes collecting the series in FS such a challege. If you want a good overall breakdown of the entire series withh all the design changes over the years, step counting, and year by year fs rarity I suggest The Jefferson Nickel Analyst by Bernard Nagengast, I've added a link to an ebay listing if interested.

I think I may have it somewhere around here as I bought a few coins from him. I will see if I can find it for you.

Sorry I can't find Jason's contact info . Maybe Speedy will see this and have it.
I would like to see varietynickel.com back up. It was the best Jefferson Nickel site by far.
