Inherited Coin Collection and Clueless about it.

My grandfather passed away and I inherited his coin collection. There are many morgan silver dollars and many indian head and wheat pennies dated from 1888 and above. I also have an Eagle dollar? I am sure to have many questions as I am trying to do research about these coins. The most curious bag of coins is an envelope of 1974 pennies. I have no idea of their importance but they must have some signifigance or he would not have collected them.
The funny thing is, he passed away over 20 years ago and I have had these coins in my closet in a jewlry box (just as I received them). I have not bothered with them, I just kept them (thinking my family would be upset with me if I attempted to sell them). The reason I opened the box is that it keeps falling off the shelf. I do not know how or why. My mother says he is trying to tell us that there is something valuble in that box (If you believe in that sort of thing). So I am now taking the time to research each coin.
Back to the pennies, I do not know why he collected these 1974 pennies. I do notice that one of the pennies looks as though it had been 'double stamped'. Is there some 'value' to 1974 pennies and what am I looking for when I examine them?
Thank you for any advice you can give me on this long, yet interesting venture.
Peg.

Welcome sounds like you have some good stuff to go through. The 1974 coins may have been collected because of some special occaision like birth year, 50th birthday, Wedding or anniversery. Good Luck
