1857 Flying Eagle Cent with Error???

I just bought this coin and I thought it might be an error. The front of the coin is normal but the reverse has a huge chunk missing. The mark is over half way throught he coin in depth. Since the front is not marked or pushed out any where the missing part is could this have happened at the mint. Any Ideas on this one??
Thanks again,
Ben

That looks like some kind of post-mint damage to me.

Hi,
A few things. It looks like it could be a lamination type error. Where a portion of the coin broke away. It could also be post mint damage, It's Hard to tell.

I am more curious about the other side though. Can you take a closer look at the Eagle's eye and the word UNITED. There are som nice doubled dies on coins of this date and I think I see doubling on the eagle's eye.
Thanks,
Bill

Here are some closer pics. I did not see any doubling in this area but then again I am pretty new to the sport of error hunting.
Thanks again,
Ben

Hi,

It's so tough to tell without the coin being here. The tops of the U, N, I , T, E and D look a little thicker than they should. That is the sign of one of the Doubled Die varieties. It could just be flattened by wear though. Take a look at the tops of those letters carefully and let me know if you can see anything that likes like "two" tops to any of those letters.
Have Fun,
Bill

I see what you mean by being a little thicker than normal . The E and D look a somewhat different but the coin is wore pretty bad. I included one more photo. Thanks for all of your hrlp.
