Below is a link to a genuine split planchet SLQ. This coin was once owned by a member of our coin club and appeared in CW maybe 18 months or so ago.

How exactly do you know the story is not as suggested by the seller?

I mean it does look suspicious, but the photos aren't big enough for me (at least) to levy such accusations.

    What am I missing?

How many would you like? I can run to a coin shop tomorrow, and I think I have a saw in the garage,if not I can always get one.Apparently you dont understand "gimmicks"

a gimmick is a quirky feature that distinguishes a product or service without adding any obvious function or value.

So how many would you like? Gimmick+Copy=

Notice how both portions have the same amount of wear ? I figure either
    a) they circulated separately and were miraculously reunited - like the reunion of twins separated at birth
    b) they miraculously circulated together all those years
    or
    c) some sap sawed it in two and the whole auction is another e-bay scam

I haven't logged into Heritage to see how much it's quarter sold for...

Not my expertise by a long shot

Regardless, either look like gimmicks to me.

Not my expertise by a long shot
, but who's to say someone didn't get out some liquid nitrogen or some other super-cold liquid, and shatter the Heritage quarter?

It sold for $4600.00,so I guess he must of missed that auction, and is now offering it for a sweet low price of $500,thats a $4100.00 savings,I think I might jump on itClick here to enlargeClick here to enlarge

I suppose if Heritage auctioned it, it was somehow authenticated as a true split planchet.

So far to date in the past 6months,I have seen 2 supposed "split" coins both in anacs holders.Click here to enlarge, one standing liberty that split, right after circulation in 1917,and somehow managed to stay together for almost 100 years, and a indian head penny,at least the indian looked like a true lamination, that someone peeled in half.

I'm no metallurgist, but couldn't repetitive and rapid freeze-thaw cycles produce this result?

Didn't I hear that there have been a few Chinese counterfeits that have slipped through certification and grading at TPGs?

    If this is true, then...
