How hard is it to get Ikes?

If you wanted to get some Ikes how hard is it to get them?

The reason that I ask is that I got about $200 in circulated Ikes from the bank about a year ago. I got them at the bank when I was asking for $.50 pieces. Sometimes I spend some here and there, but I've only gone through about $50.

I see a lot of these on ebay everyonce in a while, but it seems like they always go for barely over face. I try hard to stay away from hoarding, but I just have in my mind that someone might want these someday.

If you had these, what would you do?

If it were me, I'd spend them or give them to someone who likes to collect them. But that's because I never really cared for the coins much. But that's just me.

If you like 'em - keep 'em. If you don't - trade 'em to somebody who does.

From what I've seen you can get Ikes from dealers for about $2.00 a piece, but they are circulated and not what I would collect. However the 71-74 silver proofs are quite available and are fairly inexspensive. The only one that is high in comparision is the 1973 proof and its about $15.00-$18.00 more then the others that trend for $7.00-$10.00 a piece. Other then that go for the mint sets that contain Ikes. They should be higher quailty collectable then circulated coins from the banks. If I'm not mistaken I think the Ike has the distinction of being having the shortest year run of years minted.

as far as i know this is a one of a kind ike dollar and would be hard to get..

As I remember it, some on our list posted a few months back that Ike's in high grades are very hard to acquire, simply because the facial area usually has a lot of damage. The post read the cheek on the Ike Dollar usually has lots of nicks and dings. Even in the mint sets. When looking for your Ike's to collect be sure to examine the face so as to collect the best coins you can for your collection. Jim

circulated Ikes are relatively easy to come by for close to face value. Whenever I get some I spend them.

Just at the local bank today and picked up my usual 4 rolls of half dollars. I do that each week. Once in a while find something. So I asked if they ahd any large silver dollars like the ike ones and was told they had lots of them, did I want any. I said no. To hard to get rid of. I Have enough fun watching the look on people's faces when I hand them a half dollar. Did you know there are no vending machines that take a half dollar that I know of anyway. Also, coin changers carried by train conductors don't have a slot for halves. Main thing is the cash registers don't have a spot for them either.
