    Fun box....finally

Not a monster box, but compared with the many shutouts and one-40%er boxes lately, this was a nice change. In today's box of halves I found:

    • 2 nice 2002 P (and one extremely circulated that I didn't pull)
    • 1 1974s proof (very circulated unfortunately....barely can tell it is a proof)
    • 3 40%ers
    • 1 magician's coin (a double sided tails half that is well done...hard to see the cut). Actually, my 14 year old daughter found it while she helped me open the rolls....I let her keep it.
    • and a 1986 s Statue of Liberty Commemorative proof half Click here to enlarge Click here to enlarge Click here to enlarge Though it is the clad version and not the silver, it still is in great shape and a very nice coin (especially for 50 cents). This is the first commemorative I've found roll searching. Click here to enlarge
All in all, a very fun box.

Good job on the SOL half.

You may want to polish the proof, since as is its only worth face, it may come out nicer if polished.

I started searching halves around June 1 and have found a bunch of proofs. I thought it would be cool to get a set of proofs from circulation. Some, not in very good shape, but all have the s mint mark. Here is what I've got so far:

    71 (2)
    72 (3)
    73
    74
    76 (4 clad, 1 silver clad)
    77 (4)
    78
    79 (2 type I and 14 type II)
    80
    81 (3)
    83 (3)
    85
    86
    88 (3)
    91 (2)
    92
    93
    94
    02
    03 (3)
    04
    05 (2)
    09

If anyone have extras and want to trade for my extras, PM me.

I've got a good start, and think it would be cool to complete the set through roll searching. This could be fun....

I Disagree. I could be wrong, but would think that if it's bad enough that you would consider putting it back into general circulation (as you already have one), you may as well make it look good Click here to enlarge, but without a picture, you can't really tell.

Just a general rule that polishing and cleaning coins puts scratches on it and damages it. I'm not sure I want to do that to a coin. Do you have a suggestion on how it could be done without damaging the coin?

I've tried using silver polish gloves & gentle rubbing on a half to give it more of a "shine", and it didn't seem to create any damage.

This probably will not remove attached dirt, etc., and will remove toning, but on a dirty 74s, does it make a difference?

Of course this is not a good idea for something that is valuable as is (or even a 70 D/S), vs. the novelty of the mintmark.

If I made some sort of big error in logic here Click here to enlarge, please tell me why.

    Good luck.

    OH!!!!

I thought you were talking about the 1986 proof Statue of Liberty coin I had found in that box. That's why I thought you were nuts! Thanks for clearing it up (you had only said "proof" and I wrongly assumed you meant my SOL proof....I just looked back at my post and I didn't identify the SOL as a proof, but it was, and I've now edited it, but that was what caused my confusion)

The 1974S I found in that box isn't worth polishing....there are many, many deep scratches....I will still keep it for now as it is a proof, but it will never be attractive in the hand. But, as said, as a general rule, I don't clean or polish coins...but if I ever did, a regular proof out of circulation might be one to experiment with.

I haven't searched anything for a couple of weeks and was going to get a box of Nickels to see if I could find one of the 20 I need to finish my found in rolls set, well my 6 year old nephew and official roll searching partner came over Sunday unexpectedly and wanted to search some Lincolns since I didn't know he was coming I didn't have any. I told him I would get a box or two this week so he can search for the Log Cabins, and Sitting on a Log (as he calls them) and the Queens heads (canadians) he would rather find those three than an Indian or a Wheat. Kinda puts the hobby in perspective Fun First then money. Oh well i will wait until next week to get the nickels keeping the boy interested is far more important than filling a book with pocket change.
