Here's something that I don't understand......if it is illegal to melt them, how come you can smash them into a souvenier at amusement parks and tourist locations? Why is that not illegal?

I'm bursting!

I have not found a 90% silver in the last 13 or so boxes of halves, and in those, I'm found a total of 3 40%ers. Not had the luck.

Well, I just got a box of half dollars and opened 3 rolls...........6 40% silvers, 1 '64 Kennedy 90%er, and one very, very worn 44 (can't see the "19") Walking Liberty (but really, who cares if it is worn.....It's a Walker for face value!!!). And.....I have 47 rolls to go. Each roll had multiple silvers.

I'm showing GREAT restraint, because my 15 year old son has helped me search for these before and has never found a silver. SO, I'm waiting to open the rest until he gets home from football practice and can help me. But, since I'm choosing not to open any of them until then, I HAD to tell someone who would be excited about this (my awesome wife just doesn't get the least bit excited about coins).

I'll give a full report later!

::fingers crossed for more, but even if not, it has been a great box::

Got 2 rolls of halves today and found my first 64!

Great finds Bob, good luck on the rest of the box! Don't worry, my wife doesn't get excited at all either when I try to show her what I find. She doesn't understand the excitement of opening all these rolls and finding the few great ones.

Well, my son and I had a blast....my daughter even got involved. Here is the final total for my box of halves:

40% - 33!!!!

69 - 3
68 - 6
67 - 11
66 - 11
65 - 1

AND, 1 1976 S silver clad (I believe this is 40%, correct?)

90% Kennedys - 7

64 - 7

90% Walking Liberty - 2
44 - 1
42 - 1

In all, 42 silver coins! Though many had quite a bit of toning (not attractive), who cares......What fun!!!!!!

Great idea getting the family involved and an awesome haul, congrats!

Get the boxes from your bank.....some banks have them and some will order them for you if you ask. This one came from Wells Fargo. I started going to them, finally opened an account (my bank wouldn't order me any halves) for the minimum, and after asking very nicely a couple of times, they now order one box ($500) a week for me. I have two other banks who order boxes as well. I go through the box, take them to my bank that has a free coin counter, get 5 $100 bills, then go buy another box of halves. Like I said, many of my boxes have been completely free of silver...but once in a while, you hit the jackpot.

In all, I've searched 17 boxes plus another $330 in halves that were single rolls from banks in the past 3 months or so and found 106 silver halves including 4 Walkers, 4 Franklins, 20 1964 Kennedys, and the rest 40% silver clad.

I also forgot to mention that in my box tonight was a terrific die crack. I'll post pics later, but there is a raised line from the rim between the 20 and the 00 on the obverse to between the T and Y of Liberty intersecting the E of We.

It was a Great night....

And then you pack-up what you don't need/want and bring them back to the bank I presume?
