mcrow24, those are great finds! finding a coin over a hundred years old is incredible, let alone 3. I've gone through about 30 boxes of nickels (1500 rolls) and found only 1.

Merc, i'm guessing thats an ender pic from the box with 46 in it? That must have been the sweetest ender.

I haven't searched in awhile, but I just went through a box of nickels, there wasn't much in it, only a 1982 proof that is first proof I've found that isn't beat up, it looks sweet. Also, twice in the last two weeks I've gotten one penny back in change. 1st time it was a 1947, second time it was a 1937... crazy.

Also, clorox - amazing score! When you said you were calling banks, do they always answer? Do they like being called asking if they have halves? I would think about doing that, but it just seems they wouldn't be interesed in someone calling to see if they have coins in.

Thanks. It was pretty exciting, the War Nickel and the 3 V's came in the same roll so it was a pretty stacked roll. I just found out why people like to search rolls, it's the chance that you could pull something really cool. It's the whole opening packs of baseball cards effect from when I was a kid.

Nice finds! The only thing I've found was a 1879 penny in near mint condition at a pawn shop.

No, that was actually the very first V I found. The box with 46 had two enders. Click here to enlarge

Exactly like what it's like, instead of throwing money away, I'm at least breaking even, ha.

    Box of halves, skunk, btw.

Yes. Except with coins you can't lose money. I also speak from experience, it was fun while it lasted, but I try not to think of all the money lost first from pokemon, then magic the gathering, then basketball, then football cards. With coins, I have done slightly better Click here to enlarge

Man, don't even remind me, it must be in the realm of $4k-$5k.

If I'd bought silver instead, for the $6/oz or so it traded at then.... good god.

Not to mention if we would have started roll searching back then, what we would have found...Click here to enlarge

I tried to get into it at 8 years old (circa '94) but my mom wasn't having any of that.

Yeah, I did the whole sports cards thing, then did Magic: The Gathering too. Started M:TG at Alpha and had 2 Black Lotus cards and a full set of both alpha and beta.

vtvick: It really depends. Some branches' numbers just send you to an automated system with no hope of actually getting someone in the building on the line. Citibank and B of A are the worst at this, but it varies branch to branch. If an 800 number is listed I don't even bother trying to call. When you do get someone on the line they're usually helpful and will check the vault and with the tellers. I think sometimes the people that answer don't know what a half dollar is. Saying 50 cent piece helps a bit. Getting someone that's not helpful or rude or immediately asks if I have an account is very rare; maybe one in fifty.

YMMV, of course. I have years of experience of answering phones and customer service in a retail environment, which probably helps Click here to enlarge

good lord mcrow, did you find them all in packs or buy them? you might not have done too bad then, I can't believe how much those old cards go for. what did you do with them, as i'm sure you know those sets are worth many many thousands of dollars each?

    Clorox, amazing find. Congrats.
    $260 in CWR Halves:
1 1953D Franklin, 8 40%ers. Unfortunately, one of my better days lately.
    A lousy cell phone pic:

Anyway, this was my first attempt at this but I had some good results:

    2 toned 1997 nickels
1911,1899, and 1907 "V" Nickels (very worn, but still cool finds)
    1 1945 War Nickel
Several 1930's and 1940's nickels (non-war nickels) that I needed for my Jefferson Set.

Overall I feel like of got a pretty good haul.
Oh sure, you pick up 10 rolls of nickels and get goodies, I pick up 5 rolls of nickels and get....five rolls of nickels :P
