silver eagles, everyone loves em right? but whats the best ones to buy? is it worth the extra 10 or so dollars to get the certified coins. or just spend 10 over that and get a proof? i really cant decide. all i know is that once my eyes hit one a llittle devil popped up on my sholder and said that i need all of them. also are the values of these coins directly linked to bullion value or will these coin continue to gain value every year?

and also before i forget. what is up with the 1/2 and 1 pound silver eagles ive seen online. are these for real?

In my mind, the silver eagles are primarily nice looking bullion coins. But any time the Mint puts a date on something, and one of the TPGs puts it in a holder, it immediately becomes collectible and subject to the whims of the collector population. So they might rise in value independent of the price of silver. Personally, I wouldn't pay extra to buy a certified or proof silver eagle, and I wouldn't go out of my way to collect them by date. But many people obviously do. For me, their value derives from the silver content. If it was a clad coin, I doubt that it would be nearly as popular.

I don't 'collect' Eagles, but I have some and I think that the proof coins look very nice. I think their price is somewhat reasonable and they come in a nice holder. I mainly just collect what looks nice to me. I'm fond of the Canada silver dollars right now.

Howdy rambozo.I collect the silver eagles also but I'm wanting a complet set at MS 69.I think only you can answer that question,each person collects for a different reason and each has a price range to stay in.So the wife keeps telling me. If you are collecting for future resale I would say slabbed proofs,but if you are going to keep then go UNC and save your self some $$$.But thats just my .02

I would get them raw....the 1 pound and such are not real...they are made by somebody else than the US mint....

I would try to get the 86 and the 96 first...they are the harder ones to find....and remember...from 86-95 the strikes are week....so a good strike is hard to come by.

I have all of the Proof ASE's 1986-Present, they are just beautiful.

They all hold their purchase value, actually the value is about 5% above the purchase value from the get-go . In addition some of the lower mintage ones have gone through the roof, early to mid ninties. (i.e. 1994-P @ $225+)

Some day when it rains Dollars in Detroit, I plan on picking up the whole MS69 BU set, but until then, I can just I can be happy with what I have.

I don't collect them, but just picked up six raw uncirculated coins at an antique shop for $9.50 each. They were toning and I liked the look.

I'm with you though, these are IMHO the most beautiful coin the US Mint is currently producing....that's affordable

I'm all set in my own mind. I bought the reproduction for 1995-W. Looks just as nice as the others. If I did have a spare $6K laying around, you can be rest assured I still wouldn't buy it.

I am currently putting together three sets of raw Silver Eagles from 1986 through 2005 and I can buy most of them for about 10 dollars each. Except for the 1986's and the 1996's which for some odd reason cost much more. I recommend getting the whitman classic coin album if you are into books because they look beautiful with nine holes to a page and seeing the back of the coin is always a plus. So far, I only have 3-86's, 3-87's, and 3-89's in the books. It is hard not to go out and just buy all the rest that I need but I have resisted by bidding on the 1998-S matte finish Kennedys I see on eBay from time to time. I won one today so I have sort of lost my excuse for resisting the temptation. I understand completely your love of silver eagles.

Its not odd....they are the "keys" to that set....read my post in this thread and you will see that I said to get them first...the reason the 86 is higher is because its the first year....the 96 is hoarded and also if the first year for a strong strike after about 10 years of week strikes!
