Collecting Jefferson Nickels, 1997+ ?

Okay, I'm a VERY casual coin collector. I like sorting through my change to find the recently minted coins, like the Statehood Quarters, the Presidential Dollars, and now I'm working on "Jefferson Nickels 1997+ Volume Three" (because of the new keelboat, bison, ocean, etc pictures).

My new Jefferson Nickel folder takes both D and P minted coins. I'm finding that the "P" coins don't make it out to California much! I assume East Coast collectors aren't seeing many "D" coins. How do other casual collectors deal with this? I can think of the following: (1) travel to the east coast and buy a lot of rolls and go through them; (2) purchase specific coins (not really what I want to get into); or (3) setup pen-pal/trade with someone on the east coast who will trade P's for D's. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Erin
