I hope your father in law appreciates it.
I know most people wouldn't, and those people are people who don't know much about coins, or just don't care.
If I gave a coin related gift to my mom, I don't think she would like it very much, and make that really any member of my family, except for my grandparents, I guess it would kind of be weird though, getting a gift of something you are not a part of, like coin collecting.
But all the best to you, and I hope he loves it.
