The SF mint was closed 1956 - 1968. I do not have time to find it now, bjut I believe that the Philadelpha mint was also closed for a year.



The "Shell Case" cents were also made in 1946 and, so far as I can tell, had nothing to do with saving copper or nickel.
You guys are forgetting one branch mint... Manila. It didn't coin actual US Currency, but it was an official branch of the US Mint.
