1984, the mint was experimenting with other compositions and struck a bunch of copper clad steel cents. When they finished their experiments they took them to a foundry for destruction but one of the bags of cents broke open. A worker at the foundry picked up several of them and kept them. Later (around 1994) he sent a few of the to Coin World for examination. So they do exist.
