A very limiting factor might be the amount of time and money you have to
spend on collecting. Many times, a person starts with one area and is then
"converted" to another. Several collecting areas require either a large
expenditure of money OR a large expenditure of time to gain knowledge
to cherry-pick varieties. I would suggest perhaps the Lincoln cent series,
or even limit it to Lincoln Memorial Cents as there are many varieties and
can usually be obtained in high quality coins. This could expose you to
mintmark variations, double dies, handling of coins, etc., all good aspects
for any future collecting. I also like the Jefferson 5 cent series for similar
reasons. When funds are tight, these 2 series have the greatest chance
of something nice being found in bank rolls. They also present a large
variety for grading skills. If money is not so much a problem, I like high
end Buffalo 5 cents, what a beautiful coin! Having money is wonderful,
but knowledge is necessary to be successful.
