That coin appears to be to have been dipped, the obverse re-colored with something like Dellers, and the reverse left to its own accord and having retoned an artificial-looking color.

Sorry to hear the news, Matt.
I would suggest you take Tom's advice and reach out to CAC.
They were wonderfully helpful on my submissions and I learned as much or more from the coins that...
Been out of town and quite busy lately.
I return to see I've dropped like a rock!
Well done, guys!
That's much more typical of the copper-spotted gold I've seen....
...and I note a complete lack of green hue....Mike
I hear you, and I think you make a good argument, but I've given up long ago relying on the TPGs to make any determination for me. I'm sure you'd say the same. :)
Let me ask you a pointed...
Those don't look like copper spots to me, they look like PVC.
Regardless of what they are, the good news is that gold tends to clean up well. A quick dip by an expert should remove them, and I...
p.s. Matt, you know I like you and Rick. You both have great eyes for coins. Unfortunately, I give this coin about 1.3% chance of getting a CAC sticker. Doesn't make it a bad coin -- to the...
Tom's a heck of a nice guy, and a fountain of knowledge, but you're not going to find many "deals" in his cabinet. I'm not sure finding "deals" is in anyone's best interest, and you're going to have...
That's the challenge with IHC varieties -- a very thin market.
Impossible to be sure, but looks like a high-end AU coin to me.
I would call it "mellowed mint red", but I can also be kind of anal too. :)
Matt,
Were all of these Rick's?
When you get them photographed, please send me copies, if you don't mind. I might pick up a few if they're not already sold. :)
Thanks...Mike
These coins are notoriously difficult to capture in a photograph and thus to grade from a photograph, so I cannot say with any sense of authority if you will be well served by a regrade. I suppose...
I generally don't like NGC 66 BN large cents. To me, they generally look overgraded and overpriced.
This coin, however, is the exception to the rule.
Very nice, Matt.
67 all the way.
I hope 66, I guessed 67.
5b
66 or 67 FB.
I can't see a 65 unless there's something I'm not seeing in the photos.
Dream on, FEC boy.
66 luster, 65 surface. I'm going with 66 on this one.
Holy Smokes!
Where did MNcoinman come from?
Well done, sir!
I've been away attending to business, and haven't had the time to frequent this forum recently. Sorry. Please believe me I'd...
I guessed 6.
I think you guys are confusing die polish for something more problematic.
Congrats on your NEWP. Setting aside the holes for a moment, that coin has quite a nice planchet. Enjoy the coin in good health, Marshall!
guessed 66, but would not surprise me in a 65 slab.
always tough to guess if the spot was there at grading or not.
Luster looks delicious, but not good enough to make up for all of the ticks and taps and still make 67. I guessed 66.
