Market for Large Size Type Notes

Recently I was shopping on Ebay and hoping to snag a nice $1 or $2 large size 1917 US note to add to my type collection. However, the auction prices jumped way over what I was willing to spend based on published price guides and previous auction results. Here is an example:

I know that "bidiots" can drive individual auction prices sky high. However, it seems that there has been a trend lately for this type of material. Is it just me, or have prices for large size type notes been increasing across the board over the past several months? I am referring specifically to certified notes in the VF-XF grades.

$200 is a little high, but not unusual for a certified 45 EPQ. XF notes in EPQ status are hard to find, since many are processed to appear AU or better.

The large size note market has actually been declining, except for ultra-rarities and low grade entry level notes.

When it comes to higher quality notes (Large Size) I was never a fan of Flea Bay...
I did my research on Auction Archives, Stayed within two 3rdPArty Grading Co's..PMG and PCGS..

What I learned for all of it is to be patient..your note will come around all you need to do is be ready to act.

After this post I looked at the FUN Currency Auction Catalog Jan 6-10 2011 and saw my collection listed in there..man do I ever wish I had it back :(

Don't worry about getting it back Rick. Start a whole new one. Just requires some strategy on how to find it. I'm certain you can make it even better than before.

Here's a 35 EPQ that also went for over $200. It does have the Elliott Burke signature combination but in the price guides I've seen it should only be about $10-$15 more than the Speelman Whites.

Also, I found an interesting article about the large size type market in 2014:

Most of my recent purchases have been coins, but lately I have been longing for some nice currency. I just picked up a nice VF35 Green Eagle that should be coming in the mail soon that I will be sure to post. I had to fork over some money to keep from getting sniped; at least on Ebay the market seems to be hopping.

I would take that article with a grain of salt. It was written in Dec 2013. I've watched the market for some time, and so far the it hasn't corrected for mid range large size notes. Notes priced between $300 and $10,000 are still undervalued right now. I can't say to buy, because it's hard to tell where the bottom might be.

Don't be fooled by the inflated Buy-It-Now asking prices. Many sellers seem to think they're living in the past. With no listing fees on eBay they can afford to keep them up forever, hoping a sucker with deep pockets comes along. In reality anyone spending over $100 on a collectible will do some research to make sure they're not being taken.

I don't have too good luck buying large sized notes on Ebay either. I tend to buy most of mine either from reputable currency dealers online, or largely from dealers at coin shows. It seems shows are death sentences for currency, as they sit unloved and not looked at behind glass. Most dealers are more than happy to sell at heavy discounts just to move them at shows. This has been my experience.
