    Thank you Chip!

    Chip:

I'm certain I speak for the others who received "honorable mention" in the thread OP by PETER, warning viewers not to pay by means other than credit card. We thank you for being a great buyer who created a great atmosphere for a great transaction, and are happy that you were pleased with the outcome. I don't know the particulars of the unsatisfactory transaction, but believe that only the buyer complained with a threat. I've learned that buyers like yourself are at least 50% of a successful transaction. Thanks for the consideration. RICH

Hey, yeah I do like your little 1829 1 Real, I can still see part of 'Libertad' but the shots are kinda small. I can understand your reason for liking for such Spanish and Mexican coins. Just like you said in your profile post... it's so interesting that they were accepted as legal tender in the US untill an act of Congress discontinued their use in 1857, if I am not mistaken. I would think that even in the 1850s, especially in the various US territories, you would still see alot of late 18th century spanish silver coins of Carolos III and IIII, heck, it probably wouldn't be uncommon to find earlier ones of Philip V or even earlier.... very interesting subject.

    Hey Chip:
Just thought I'd drop a line to say 'Hello'. How's your search coming? I'm still working on the set of BU or better Washington quarters, Franklin half dollars and modern commens. Almost there with the modern commens except for a few Atlanta BU coins. Also, I'm still working on the unc. mint sets. I just picked up a 1957 and now I lack only about 6 of them. By the way, I know we're not supposed to 'clean' coins but one of the quarters in the 57 has some ugly tarnish on the rim. I have read that the 'tarnish' (the black stuff) will only get worse unless it is arrested. All the coins are toned, but I have some fear about the quarter becoming damaged at some point because of the tarnish. (The 58, 56, 55, 53, 52, and the 57 all have 'toning'. Which I distinguish from tarnish.) Should I do anything about it? What do you think? Always glad to hear from you. Be well Chip. Eric

    Hey Chip:
Hope that you are doing okay. Thought I'd drop you a line to see how things are with you. I'm doing fine. I just picked up a 1995 D Atlanta High Jump so I am now only missing a few BU coins to complete my set of modern commens. (Law Enforcement; Wheelchair Athelete; Tennis; Rowing; 1994 World Cup;1996 National Community Service, I think that's about it. I still have to go after that 1995 W Silver Eagle to complete a set of eagles. That one may take a while though because of the price. I think I may start to go after some of the earlier commens. though like the California series and the BTW/GWC coins. Anyway, I just wanted to say 'Hey'. Be well Chip. Eric

    Chip,

That site is correct the one we have is the name on base and not the name under base which is the 58.

Hope this clears it up for you.

PS sorry it took me so long to respond.

    Matt

Third Party Grading and the Novice Collector

by chip on 08-01-2010 at 10:42 AM
Third party Grading is something that I have not much experience with, since I have spent about a year casually, in the hobby I have gained some impressions through my interactions and experiences and through my reading.

First, I feel that I am more of a hobbyist than an investor, an investor has as his primary motivation for holding coins is to increase or preserve his money. He may appreciate the beauty of a coin, but he does not buy a coin because of its beauty but because he thinks,

A Story Set in the Past

by chip on 06-20-2010 at 03:57 PM
A Dragon had invaded the land. All the signs were there. Crops ruined, shops shuttered, misery and poverty everywhere. All the villagers knew that they needed a hero that could find the dragon and slay it in its lair.

The oldest men had heard of dragons, not from their fathers, but from their grandfathers, and their grandfathers had also had it second hand. So what was known of dragons was spotty knowledge at best.

This knowledge was that dragons were coldblooded and reptilian,

A Story set in the future

by chip on 06-06-2010 at 02:53 PM
I got off work and was on my way to the bank, I had my check to cash and I also wanted to see if I could get to my safe deposit box safely. I had been saving my collectable coins in there and now that the government had recalled all bullion and since my coins were classed as bullion I wanted to get them out but the bank had a treasury agent posted there every week for the last three months.
And anyone opening their box had to do so in front of the agent and let the agent inspect the box.

Down in the Valley

by chip on 05-23-2010 at 02:45 PM
Life is composed of peaks and valleys, one day you are up, later you can be down. It seems to be either the way we people are built, or the way the world is organized.

For some time I have had my eye out for two coins, one would be a nice 1917 type 1 slq, the other was one of the new Libertads, besides that, other irons in the fire were my daughters wedding, and a neighbor boys, who has been friends with my son for over twenty years wedding, plus work has been gung ho, lots of overtime,

The Brick and Mortar Coin Shop

by chip on 05-09-2010 at 06:06 PM
I have a fondness for coin shops, the good old fashioned brick and mortar shops, to tell the truth tho, there are only two coin shops that I have visited that are actually Brick and Mortar, there are also some located in conventional framed buildings, in shopping malls, and at flea markets. But I lump in those other shops at malls and stalls in the brick and mortar genre, which is basically a shop that has a physical presence, a store front, a counter, with a dealer or employees manning those counters.
