Here is one of my favorite coins from the short set of World and United States Coins I received from my dad in 2008, which he received from his dad in 1991.

My grandpa had the value of $45 on it and UNCL on the 2x2. I can agree with the rather generic uncirculated grade, and the coin doesn't have many marks. Don't know how these are graded, but I'd imagine this one would be in the low MS range, due to the luster it lacks, from a possible dipping it may have received at one point. .

Any comments on the coin are much appreciated!

    Here it is, enjoy.

This Japanese bronze coin with a mintage of nearly 523 million units is very common.
While the coin appears unc the chance that it has been dipped will lower the grade to below MS..
An uncirculated bronce coin should have a lustre red color, this coin appears faded and again take the grade
    well down below MS.
Just my oppinion, hope it helps.

I have a couple of these. I think I'm a sucker for some of the older Japanese/Chinese/Hong Kong coins that look "cool" to me. My outdated Krause book has it at $45 for uncirculated, but everything else is at less than a dollar. Pretty big difference in price right? Nice coins though!

These are quite tough in no question unc and prices go upward of $100. Unfortunately they are fairly common in high end AU and such pieces are undervalued by Krause at about 35c.

I like these old 10 Y's but nice examples are really tough. Few have luster and the ones that do have wear.

Y#73, with a reeded edge, was only minted for 8 years - 1951-58, but with a 1954 mint output of 520,900,000, highest of the series by ~10%, it's high valuation as an Unc is a mystery to me.

Absolute Krause and Japanese Numismatic Dealers Assn. Catalog values are quite different, but the relationships among different years are generally the same. However, JNDA values AU examples significantly closer to Unc values than Krause does.

Both catalogs reflect similar sharp drops in value between the reeded edge version and the plain edge minted since 1959, with annual mintages ranging from <70-million to 1.78-billion.

I like this coin, but I can't see myself becoming a collector of these.
The design itself is very bland, but this was just one of the coins that caught my eye and sparked some interest on day one of getting the set of coins I received.
It isn't really 'beautiful' design, but I guess my eyes can make it seem that way, due to the story behind it.

    35c to $100 is a big difference.
I remember seeing a few uncirculated examples a while back going for around $35 or so, but they were just advertised as uncirculated, meaning they could've been nice sliders. Was a while back, wouldn't be able to tell or remember either way.

    Quite a large mintage.
But was there some kind of melting of them, or something else that caused them to be in higher demand at an uncirculated grade, to jack the price?
