Has anyone had luck with searching Quarters? I already do dimes and halves. Just curious if anyone has had luck with boxes of quarters or if the boxes end up being full of state coins that I don't want.

I'm lazy and don't feel like going through 300 pages of roll searching posts, so I'm starting this thread...:goof:

Went through 2 boxes a few days back. Found nothing. Going through a box of dimes now. Nothing.....12 rolls left, not getting my hopes up. I'm sticking with halves and cents, with an occasional nickel box.

I think you might be better off finding Canadian Silver Quarters in any rolls than you would any American.

    1920-1967 (90% silver?)
    1967-1968 (50% silver)

I found a '68 in my loose change a few weeks back. It may have been from a roll. This was right when I started roll hunting. I got something like 3 rolls of quarters at my bank. I threw them in with my spare change when I was done, thinking I had nothing. Later I went thru my change again after reading that Silver was before '69 in Canada.

While some folks may be aware and have picked thru the US silver coins here in the states, people may be more naive when it comes to the Canadian Silver. Just a thought.

  6. I have had the worst luck when it comes to doing quarter rolls. Nothing of interest, nothing older than 65, no varieties that I am aware of, no errors of even the most minor of status (not even a struck through grease!) No Canadians or other countries.

I once did get an entire roll of Arizona quarters when they were brand new. That was the highlight of my quarter roll hunts, sadly.

I have had better luck in the quarters that come from the laundymat. That's where I found all 6 2009 P designs, several struck throughs, and a progression of die chips on the Guam quarter from last year.

I don't even do quarter rolls anymore.

one day i got 2 silver quarters out of a pepsi machine, so i go back often lol.

i put $1 of change in(don't use bills, because it will run the machine dry of given change out). i then hit the return button. i have had some luck, so far i am at 6 or 7 silvers. i just through them in with the others, so i don't remember the exact number, but its at least 6.

no banks around me will order halves, so i am going to try quarters and will let you know after a few boxes. it aint going to be till next week because of a coin show next sunday and i plan on purchasing a few bigger ticket items.. so sadly i must refrain from coins for the week. its tough i walked to the coin shop today and was able to keep myself from going inside, because i know would have got that ms65 gold toned buffalo!

    sorry for rambling...

Sorry for the stupid question as I am new to this. So what happens here do you go to the bank and exchange dollars for rolls of quarters and dimes? I assume you then open them and see if you get anything if not just roll them back up and bring them back to the bank?

    Is it worth it?

I can see that being a little relaxing going through it

  9. That's pretty much the jist of it, yes. My bank has a machine that you dump the coins in and the total is automatically added to your account balance. (They don't take any like CoinStar).

You also get a neat little printout telling you how many of each coin you have turned in.

It can be, just don't bring them back to the same bank.

I wish those machines took half dollars so I didn't have to roll them all back up. It is kind of pain.

are you guys saving the 1986-D and all 1983 quarters? i see that red book shows them being worth several times face value. i wonder why this is - they weren't minted in low numbers.

and are there other post-1964 quarters that are worth saving (other than the 2004 wisconsin "extra leaf" error coins)?

  12. The machines at my bank DO take half dollars, and small dollars too.

Unfortunatly, the bank either can't or won't get either of them for me, I can't roll search them and I don't have any to turn in. (Even if I could roll search them, I wouldn't turn them back in...I'd leave them as tips for fast food purchases!)

Canadian Silver before 1967 back to the 1920's was 80% silver
1967 dimes and quarters may be 80 or 50% silver
1967 halves and dollars are 80% silver
1968 dimes and quarters may be 50 % or 0% (pure nickel)
1968 halves and dollars are 0 % silver (pure nickel instead)

If you are going throug quantities of quarters, you might keep an eye out for Type B quarters on 1969 D through 1972 D.

I can see the 1983 quarters being worth a little bit because there were no mint sets that year. I'd think '82 would be in the same boat.

I've searched a lot of quarter rolls including looking over the cash drawer at work and have yet to find a single silver.

Did my first and last box of Quarters. Complete shutout, no silver as expected. No foreign coins, nothing.

Keep trying. You'll eventually get something. Here's a tip: Quit doing boxes and find a bank that has handrolled. I have found ALL my silver quarters in handrolled. Good luck. - coincrazed

Hey all, I'm new to roll searching and found this thread. I've just done quarters for now, and just $200 thus far. I've found no silver, but I've found a few minor mint errors. I've found some metal blobs, a couple of mint marks that look like a blob of metal, some scratched and faulty looking planchets...nothing big though. I still like it. It's sort of relaxing, and clerks don't look at you like your a serial-killer for turning in $100 of quarters. I was not aware of any quarters after 64 that were silver. I'll have to check that out.

There have ben special prooof sets in recent years with silver quarters. They rarely show up in circulation, but it has happened. Not to me tho yet.

I'd like to follow-up if I may. I've searched a ton of threads out here, and I'm just not finding what I need, so I'll inquire here as a follow-up.
I'm needing some feedback from more veteran quarter roll searchers about what you look for.
Here's what I'm currently doing. Does this sound good? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. (I've already taken into consideration what
I learned in the above posting.)

    1) Checking for obvioius minting issues like planchet errors, off-center strikes, rotated die, etc.
    2) Look for any quarters 1964 and older for silver content
    3) Check any 1989s for missing mint mark
    4) Look for the following state quarter issues
Wisconsin - High Leaf and Low Leaf Cornstalk error
Kansas - Bison hump and die gouge
    Minnesota - Extra Tree error
Delaware - First Stat, die crack
Arizona - Extra cactus/leaf near date , doubled motto

    5) I check all state quarters for obvious stuff, but the 5 above seem to be more noteable.

I'd appreciate any feedback from veterans. It's harder than one might think to come across complete postings and lists of quarter searching pointers.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

I would keep an eye out for high relief type B reverses on the 1969 D, 1970 D, 1971 D and 1972 D that match the proof quarters for those years.
