The 1939 Doubled Die Reverse Variety 1 is often referred to simply as the Doubled MONTICELLO Jefferson Nickel. There is dramatic doubling on both the word MONTICELLO and FIVE CENTS which can be seen with the naked eye and this variety is undoubtedly the most popular of the entire series. In my opinion, no serious Jefferson Nickel collection can be complete without the addition of this coin. While scarce in mint state, a small number of uncirculated rolls were discovered in the late 1980's. I present the Doubled MONTICELLO Jefferson Nickel of the Atlantic City Set of Jefferson Nickels: The coin is essentially untoned and has shimmering luster over bright silvery surfaces. Some minor abrasions are scattered across Jefferson's portrait and a significant mark is found on the incomplete steps of Monticello which rate 5-3-3-4 by the quarter step method. Formerly FS-022, the new Fivaz-Stanton designation is FS-801. The doubling is bold and clear whereas variety 2 is less pronounced. Both varieties only exist on the Reverse of 1940 dies. Please note that the overall strike of the coin is excellent as well. The windows and doors are all complete and there is only the slighest blending of the columns and roof. A gem example without full steps has a current population of 63/45 and the PCGS Price Guide is $1,100. Comments about the coin and photographs are welcome!
Very nice. I have been trying to cherrypick one for years and years with no luck. It looks like I'll just have to buy one to top off my sets. I'll bet it's not easy to find a nice one, even in a slab. Thanks for showing it with such great images.
that's one specatular looking coin, I would love to find a double Monticello like that one. nice pic! -shrek
Most excellent. Congratulations. My only example is an NGC AU-58. I've been trying to cherry one forever. Maybe someday...
Nice coin! But did you do something wrong on the pictures? Where is all the toning your coins usually have? Very nice coin!!
I can't believe I am about to admit this publicly, but here goes. I actually prefer my varieties untoned; the toning often obscures or draws attention away from the variety. Also, I am not sure if this variety even exists in this condition with rainbow toning. With such small populations, beggars can't be choosers.
Nice coin but one nice thing is none of my Albums have a slot for that coin. In reality there are many, many double die coins, RPM's, offsets and many other types of error coins. For me I place almost all my coins in Albums so if no slot for such a coin, I just don't bother even looking for one. That one is surpricingly noticable as a Double Die. Really something for those that collect them.
Dammit Man, I don't have one yet! That can only mean one thing! I seem to be amassing the 43/42 errors and I found what could be my second double eye in a very late die state. Maybe I can trade someone so I'll have a serious collection. Nice coin, BTW. Steve
Man, I was one one coin away from completing my Jeffs and now you say I have to have this one? Borgovan will be glad to hear that. OK, bernard, what is the price for one?:crying:
LOL, now all we have to do is get Carl to post a photo of a slabbed coin and admit that he didn't crack it out.
