1969S- PCGS PR67-CAM- real nice coin on its own without possible doubling (Rainbow toned also) Question: Is this Machine Doubling or a legitimate form of DDO? It looks like there is definitely some form of doubling going on. Appreciate comments/opinions etc on this. Thanks.
It looks like machine doubling to me. I don't see any sign of split serifs and it looks like the doubling is shelflike. Other than the R in the 4th picture, which looks a little suspect, but I can't tell from the picture.
Thanks buck: Here are 4 more pictures- check out the " S " in particular- one minute it looks MD and the next a DDO- I really don't know at this point.
My first thought was a DD. However, the doubled image is too shallow for a DD, which should be the same height as the original. Best estimate is MD.
Thanks Treashunt: Its definitely not a Doubled Die Obverse I re-examined this coin this morning and I think I may have found a possible answer. I put the coin on an angle and was able to see that each individual letter of "In God We Trust" has a second set of letters placed directly on top of the bottom set- like it was struck twice- its off by a hairline of being exactly on top of each other- that's why it showed up as not looking normal under my loupe. There are 2 sets of letters- one on top of the other. What kind of doubling is this?.
Most proofs are double struck. So........ A double struck proof. But, if verified, worth a premium. Where is Mike when we need him?
I wish there were more experts looking at this one, as I am not. But I still think it's machine doubling, but a neat coin nonetheless. I see this type of doubling on regular coinage and I've read that this type of spread is usually caused by die fatigue as the die gets to the end of it's life. I would guess the same is the case with proof dies. Keep watching this thread and maybe someone will have another opinion.
