If anyone ever found a key date or gold in a coin roll they'd:

    1) Assume it was counterfeit or altered
    2) Be correct about 1

I think BCArthur was referring to a teller wishing good luck in finding gold. I hope nobody expects to find a gold half dollar :)

Those are not proofs per se. Those years were minted as both proof and business strikes. In 1968 for example there were 100 million business strikes compared to only 3 million proof strikes. Almost every S from those three years that you find in a roll will be a business strike. I just follow the "Always save an S" philosophy. If you're more selective then look for the mirrored finish which is indicative of a proof coin.

It is just iggnorant to mark coins like that. Marking rolls is a different story.

Marking a roll is as useless as marking the coin itself, if you are attempting to keep track of coins you've searched. Many people who search coins discard the paper rolls. But even if they were reused how can you be sure the same coins go into the same roll or even the same box for that matter.

To mark rolls within your collection is another story. If that's the case why would anyone mark a coin in their own collection?

$90 in halves - several rolls of BU 1971 and 1972-D - ho hum.
    $400 in Dimes - 1 1964-D
$300 in Nickels - 2 Silver war nickels, the rest was the usual tripe from the 40s and 50s.
$70 in cents 1925, 1934 6 GVI from Canada, and the usual pile of tripe from the 40s and 50s. Oh got a cute little Bermuda cent with a pig on it from 1970 - my 8 year old daughter pilfered it and put it in her hoard though.

For while there in late 08-and through 09 I never saw new coins at all. All old. It was great. Now the economy seems to be picking up steam slowly and the mint is cranking out more new stuff. Good economy is not so good for me. Sometimes I won't buy new coins, other times if I have another bank that is holding onto old stuff that they won't sell because of commercial customers I buy the new stuff and facilitate a trade since commercial customers prefer new coins. It all works out. Pays to have so many tellers on the prowl for you.

My comment was in regards to damaging a coin by marking it up. Marking a paper roll causes no damage.
