well i was going threw some change when i came across four SILVER dimes the dates are 1964, 1963, 1962, and 1957. and to make sure they weren't counterfeit i hit them with a pencil. all of the passed except for the 1963. so i weighed it. (well really i compared its weight to the other silver coins) and it turns out it was lighter than the others! meaning it was copper/nickel. how much is this coin worth?
Weight is not the sole determinant. Metal is lost with wear. How is the color? Also, as Zach mentioned, check the rim. The 'pencil tone' test does not always work.
Based on the images you supplied, and the fact there aren't any copper/nickel dimes for 1963...I think you may have an actual copper/nickel 1963 dime! Congratulations! I agrreez! 'Murica!
sadly i can't post any pictures, i am using an ipad, and my computer has a nasty virus i would if i could though.
Coingeek, your coins won't change before you can get a photo ( or even a scan) so just put them on hold and set aside until you can get photos and an actual weight. A jewelry store, or a teacher or person in a chemistry class. Until then, you can't really get accurate comments. I know you are anxious to find out, but that is what is needed, otherwise sarcasm and off-comments will be what you get. To some of the others, there is really no need to post on a thread once you see it is going nowhere. Sarcasm, cartoons, jokes, etc do not help and does not reflect well on the CT community. Thanks Jim
To the OP and to the membership in general, I would just like to mention that if you have a college, community college, junior college, university or even some high schools, if you take a coin to the chemistry department, they have balances capable of weighing objects to one-ten-thousandth of a gram (x.xxxx g), and most would be happy to do it for you. Who knows, you might even make a new numismatist.
yeeeeeees. but the thing is, the pictures are on my camera and i cant get access to another computer sadly.
The point I'm trying to make is, if you can access this site from the iPad, why not just upload the photos directly here from the device?
sorry, im tired if u could explain, i still dont understand, the pictures were taken 30 minutes ago and are on my camera, and theres no memory card input.
According to the Apple website, the iPad has a digital, and video, camera feature. Snap some photos with your iPad, then upload them to CT from it.
