Hey guys, we just landed a craft on Mars and I don't hear anybody talking about a Commemorative coin yet? Heck, we commemorate births, anniversary of births, national parks, president's spouses and Olympics! Any guesses what type of coin they should mint or if they should mint one? A new one or something we already mint? Any guesses? Just curious.....
Besides, if "Curiosity" was the first Mars rover, a commemorative coin would have made some sense. But there have been others before ... Christian
You're right....I guessed there have been 7 prior successful landings of robotic aircraft. Now, when the first "manned" landing occurs, then we're talking coin!!!
I get a kick about the people complaining about $2 Billion spent on this project, but not the hundreds of billions thrown to bad banks and stupid blackhole projects. When a society loses the passion to explore, then there are problems.
Exactly! And add to that defence budgets many tens or hundreds this amount ... this price tag isn't that bad. Now come on, and get a manned mission going!
They'll (politicians) spend more than the price tag Curiosity cost slinging mud at one another since it's campaign/election year.
If actual humans were landing on mars there'd be more to commemorate. But Curiosity is a great achievement, though!
They could commemorate the 1909 VDB went along for the ride. Here's another thread on it. http://www.cointalk.com/t211193/
Number one, this is a coin forum, so why would any other news other than that about coins be mentioned? Number two, it was done because we are curious chimpanzees. Number three, I thought it was thrilling, worthwhile and newsworthy and I added a button to my favorites bar so I can follow it, and when and if they make a commemorative coin, I will buy one.
I don't know, ask the Chinese. They seem to be the only ones actively developing a manned space program. At this point we are unable to even put a man in orbit. For the most part our space program is back to 1961. So the next time someone says "If this country can put a man on the moon....." remember that it CAN'T. And if we seriously decided to actually go back to the moon it would probably take over ten years again.
Would it be news if the rover found a coin on Mars? Is it possible? Yes. An astronaut could of thrown a coin into space while talking a space walk from the space station and it luckily lands on Mars. Ok, I do understand that it would take a very long time to get there but everything is possible.
you're right, this should be in the General Discussion Forum The problem with manned missions is that we have as yet no technology to bring them back to Earth from Mars. Now, if you're volunteering for a one way trip, then that's a different story, but I don't think we'll be sending any people until we work that problem out.
likely not possible, Phil. The coin would either skip off of the atmosphere and into deep space or melt upon entry into the atmosphere. Either way, the only way to get a coin there is if we send one there on purpose.
They could make a Commemorative Palladium coin with Mars on the obverse side and Curiosity on the reverse side.
