I can't help it, every time that I see a proof Liberty nickle, I have to have it. For many years, I have been working on a complete set, but it is becoming a sickness. Although there is five issues that I don't yet have, for many issues, I have several examples. Today I did the unthinkable, I bought my tenth 1883 type 2. Does anybody know a good shrink for coin collectors?

My advice is to start selling your collection. I thought collecting coins was fun, and it is but I can't describe how much fun it is to hear the cash register sound emanate from my iphone when one of my E-Bay coins sells. Cha-Ching!

You could always sell your excess( if that even exists in coin collecting) and use the funds to finish your collection?

I guess I started buying multiple coins like this years ago when I went to several shows a year. It didn't much matter at the time because I would use the duplicates as trades. But now with ebay, heritage, dlrc and others, I buy coins online and don't get the same trade and upgrade opportunities that I used to have. Some habits are hard to break.

While it seems like a harmless diversion, I would be worried that valuable funds might be directed into the purchase of these duplicates and that in the future, when the "right" coin comes along that there may not be any liquidity to purchase the piece.

Save your money for the coins you need, or stop buying them altogether.

Really, they are cheap enough that the money just isn't an issue. Whenever I'm finished collecting the series and pick out my favorite from each year, I will liquidate the rest toward my next collection. I have done this in the past when I did my two cent piece proof set. I just wish that I could find the remaining coins so that I can put this set to bed and move on. I am still looking for an 1881 (pattern J-1671), 1882 (pattern J-1691), 1886, 1898 and 1911. The regular issues are easy enough to find, but I was waiting for coins that match the look of the rest of the collection. The patterns are another issue altogether.

Ah, coin addict! I'm one too, it could be worse, a lot worse. Just go with it, as long as it doesn't affect anyone else then you're alright. :D You will learn lessons, many and then you will set up guidelines for yourself and you will follow them. If it doesn't work, then by all means get some help. :thumb:

I learned a long time ago in my bartender days that anyone who steps between a man and a woman to resolve a problem is usually the one who gets into trouble.

Do you already have the 1913? If not I can send you one of my extras. I'm still trying to figure out why they stick to a magnet though?

I can evaluate your problem for a small fee. Just one proof Liberty nickel will be fine. :D

Seriously though, I see no problems with. If you like what you're buying and enjoying the hobby then its ok.

The first step in solving a problem is having a problem. (Check)
The second step is to admit you have a problem. (Check)
The third step is to give those 9 problems to me. (Pending)

Paul, I guess you missed the memo, Don't you know it is impossible to make money on your coins. That is just crazy talk. You spend the money and it is gone for good. I just LOVE spending $1500 on a coin knowing I will never see that money again. Thinking about it, I don't even like money. LOL

Well, I received the coin today. I'm happy to say that it is nicer in hand than in the images. The color is subtle, but very nice and the fields are very deeply mirrored. The scratch on the obverse is only a scratch on the slab. Really, it's one of the nicest PR-64s I have ever seen, I can't believe it didn't get a 65. This will be the last 1883 type 2 that I will buy...ever.

I think that I found an 1881 pattern today too (WOO HOOOO!!!!). I'll have it in hand in a few days and I'll decide then. But really, With a high R-6 coin that I have looked for for six years now, I think it's going to be a keeper. My Liberty nickel odyssey may finally be coming to an end.

I am going to have 73 duplicate pieces to trade. I think I will finally start my proof Trade Dollar set or Seated dollar set. These are collections that I have wanted to do for years.

And the Saints won last night...WHO DAT!!!!
