I love this coin either way. However I want to know if this coin has been cleaned and re-toned, or is it original?

    Thanks.

Who would want to artificially tone a coin that color?

Detecto, what are you, a detective? The coin's surface is flat. The coin and the color are otherwise fine. You said you like it. Learn to let it go at that.

Yes, it has been cleaned and retoned. Are you really attempting to buy raw "original" 19th century coins on E-Bay using only photos?

The coin appears to have probably been lightly cleaned at some point but was soonafter stored in an pop-in album (like those cheap Whitman albums - the ones w/out the clear, plastic shielding), where the sulfuric acid from the cardboard in the album came in contact with the coin, causing the toning we see now... So, to answer your quecsion - Yes, I believe the toning to be authentic. :)

Have you read the threads about MOST Silver coins having been dipped and retuned at one time? Guess not.
