Hi, Cointalkers, I just joined Cointalk and would like to kick things off and get acquainted with everyone through a contest.

I wrote a children's picture book on the monetary system called Treasure Hunt in the Enchanted Forest: The Search for Good Money. It covers some of the evolutionary history of the money supply, the qualities of good and bad money (see attached image for a matrix comparing different sorts of "money" a kid might come up with and their respective qualities), Gresham's Law, and sets kids on a real life treasure hunt.

To enter the contest to win a copy of the book, simply reply to this thread with what you think is the most important thing to tell a child about money (it can be practical or philosophical - have fun with it!). I'll pick my favorite answer.

The contest will be open through May 10th. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Regards,
Ian

The most important thing you can tell a kid about money?

"If you find a wallet on the ground, it is not yours. It belongs to the owner."

That's what goes through my mind every time I pick up a lost wallet 'round my town.

They all go to the police station.

Having a one year old grandchild the best advice I can give to him right now is not to put money in his mouth. Of course that will change as he grows older.

Chip, not long after the book came out my 5 year old daughter swallowed three Pennies. Now, I happened to be deployed to Afghanistan at the time, and I'd like to think that if I'd been on the scene that she might have gotten a different lesson from the book. :)

Were they copper cents? Copper has been known to alleviate certain bladder problems.

Sorry Ian. One too many bourbons, but I would like to say.....welcome to the forum dear fellow.....:)

Copper and silver are magic metals.
Copper cents can be put on duct tape and put on a joint to help arthritis pain.

Back in the land before Doug, people would put silver coins in their wells to make the water better for drinking (proven fact)

I hope that's not too inappropriate, but I think it's important for all age groups.

There are much more important things in life than money.

Gold is the currency of kings, silver the currency of gentleman, barter is the currency of peasants, debt is the currency of slaves....

Thank you for all the replies so far! This may help with ideas for future books. ;-) Seriously, though, great inputs and I appreciate the warm welcome.

I've been thinking for a while now, what to write here..simply put:

Regarding Money:

Learn to Save it; (learn to budget)
Learn to Spend it; (learn to enjoy life)
And,
Learn to Share it. (God loves a cheerful giver)(Don't be stingy)

And, okay, one more..

Money only solves money problems.

Lucy :)

Bird houses are rare? O.O

snapsalot, your point is well taken, but the story is set in an enchanted forest with sentient creatures. So, in that setting, "bird houses" are like people talking about real life houses. And while there may be a housing crisis right now (as there has been silver and copper money crises in the past), we can't produce an unlimited amount of houses like we can with some other items.
