I think I might get 3 or 4. I think down the road it could increase in value. Plus if I order my silver sets at the same time then that's shipping combined.

I think a $4.95 shipping cost is very reasonable to have a set in a sealed OGP.

It's even more reasonable when you can get 8 items sent at that cost.

Indeed it is, and if you 'pad your order' you'll save even more in shipping costs.....:)

This is terrible news for the hobby.
Coins are going the way of stamps and sports cards.
A Dark, Dark day June 7 will be.
    Shame.
These will be nothing more than common bullion.
What an opportunity waste by the US Mint.

I agree about combining items to get the cheapest shipping. My previous comment may have been misunderstood and I'm sorry that I provided no details.

I believed Kasia wanted to speculate and I suggested having one in a sealed OGP as I have my A25s. Combining different items in one shipment requires the opening of the box. Tonight I'm selling 2 sealed 2010 ATB sets. If they don't move I'll just hold them a little longer. So I combined items for cheaper shipping but they were identical. Big difference!

Huh? I'm having difficulty seeing how this is terrible news for the hobby. Everyone who wants a set to enjoy will have the opportunity to do so. The Mint will generate more revenue by selling more sets. Yep; you're right -- this is going to suck for everybody.

The Mint has been selling mint to demand items for a long time, so this is not a departure from its previous behavior. As I mentioned earlier, as evidenced by other mint to demand items, these could also well appreciate in value.

In my opinion, the manner in which the Mint handled the 25th Anniversary Set was worse for the hobby than what they will be doing with this set. If you are worried about the amount of sets that will be produced, rest assured this is probably only the beginning. Judging from last year and this year, it looks as though the Mint may be on the verge of striking at least 1 special set a year.

There are many of us who want the coins because we love the coins and want to enjoy them. We could really give a rat's behind regarding their future appreciation value or how "rare" they will be. We are just happy we can obtain a set to treasure. Is that really such a bad thing?

What are the precedents for the "one month only?" How many do you think will sell...1 or 3 million? Do you think the QC will suffer? I think this bodes well for the older proofs and RPs by greatly expanding the collector base.

whats next ? reverse proofs in monster boxes ?

nothing against ASE collectors. I just think the US MINT is trying to fix last years mistake with another mistake.

Yes; there is definitely more than 1 philosophy on this issue. I think it all depends upon your starting point and why you collect coins. Are you a fan of coin democracy or coin oligarchy? Should everyone be able to have access to things or should that just rest in the hands of a privileged few?

I think that all of those complaining about how the mint is doing this are not true collectors, but are only interested in the possible flip value. They are upset because they can't profit from this issue.

If that is indeed the case, maybe they should try to find a real job.

I like the idea and i bet 2 years from now you will see the price of them double even with the way they are doing it. There are new ASE collectors each year and will still be a few who will miss it even with it being on sell for a month.

I'm not a flipper. the fact that there is no household limit leaves the door wide open for dealers to buy large quantities. so I don't think dealers nor flippers are complaining, other than they will have to sell in volume to make a profit.

I'm a collector, I like the Idea of a San Francisco set. but there is nothing "limited" about this set. no "limit" on how many you can order, and no "limit on how many are "minted" .

why not set a limit of 1 per household with a mintage limit ? last year people complained about 5 per household being to many, but now you can buy to infinity.

I'm the opposite of a flipper.

I'm not complaining, just disappointed :(

I'm from california so I'm looking forward to buying a San Francisco Proof set. I just wish it was more Limited.

I will be ordering one because I loved the look of the reverse proof ASE from the 25th anniversary set but wasn't able to order one of those. Will it appreciate in value? Maybe... but it's good looks will always be there.

That's what I was thinking, and really I can't blame the flippers either. It's not unlike Perth mint is doing with reissuing older kookaburras. The market has a semi-predictable price based on availability and demand, and people often plan their finances around it. Moves like this can blow up someone's portfolio if they are not strictly a collector. This is why if I do premium coins it is only small premiums or something I plan to keep.

I'd be upset if the final tally was kept secret. Since we will almost assuredly know how many were ordered, minted, and delivered within months, I think this isn't such a bad thing. Who knows how "limited" it will be? No one, until the finish line. That kind of uncertainty only adds to the fun, IMHO.

  21. I am not a flipper, but if I was one, I would be really unhappy with how the Mint is handling this years ASE set. No frenzy leading up to or on the release date, no need for ebay presales, no need for unopened boxes, no race to the TPGs, no panic over a sell-out in a few days, no mint online ordering system crash (ok, that will probably happen anyway). :D A coin does not have to have a very limited mintage to appeal to a collector. It is demand that really drives value anyway. I do not care how many dealers, Mike Mezak, Apmex, MCM, etc. buy this time. As a collector, I will certainly be able to get my set with no worries about a sell out. As I said earlier, I do not believe that there are millions of hardcore ASE collectors out there. I am guessing that about 200-250K will sell in the one month time window, with about $100-125K going into collections and not for immediate resale. The others will be bought by those looking to make a profit. I hope they can make a profit, but they will not be making it off me! :smile By the way, look for the TPGs to make extra special labels for this set as well.
