My only wish is that we could simply have a "dislike" button. I would like to go on record as disapproving of a few posts that make fun of, or pick on, someone.

I understand its hard, though, since something like that could be abused. The problem with "just passing it by" is that sometimes silence can be taken as implied agreement. Maybe they could limit each account to just 1 dislike a month, that way if someone says something terrible and gets 5 dislikes, he knows he is really out of line.

Trust me, we do - lots. And there are plenty of warnings posted as well

But at the same time it is a fine line to walk. How much editing and removal of posts by mods is enough ? How much is too much ? Either extreme is bad, so we strive to achieve a balance between the two. And overall, I think the mods do a pretty dang good job of doing just that. It's not easy, believe me.

Many, I could probably even say most, of you have not been here long enough to have seen many of the threads from the past claiming that the CT mods were a bunch of Nazi storm troopers who ruled with an iron hand and played favorites all the time. And how dare they edit my post or remove it ! Or worse yet - ban the offender. But I remember them. I also remember the numerous posts made on other forums that the CT mods dared to correct or chastise. You can find them yourselves, all you have to do is look.

But ya know what ? Nothing has ever changed. We operate this forum on the same set of rules that we have had since day one. And since I was first moderator there ever was on CT I remember those rules all too well because I wrote them - based on Peter's guidance as to what he wanted. He does own the place.

I also provide guidance to all of the others moderators and every moderator there has ever been on CT about how they should go about enforcing our rules. So yes, I can say definitively that nothing in the ways things are done has ever changed. But yet we have been called every name in the book for enforcing the forum rules. And there have been more than few posts, just like this one, suggesting that we do even more.

Like I said, it's a fine line to walk. And after 10 years of walking it I think I have a pretty good idea of where that line is - and should be ;)

But comments on either side of the fence are always welcomed and accepted, and taken for what they are. And they are always allowed to stand. Never once has any post or thread criticizing the way the forum is run been edited or removed. And they never will be as long as I have anything to say about it.

Well everyone has their own personality. Some people like to start arguments and some don't. And some people like to look down or belittle others to feel better about themselves. Unfortunately this is only natural, you can't expect every person to think or act the same way.
If you go anywhere, forums, workplace, school... you would find out its exactly the same. You can't expect everyone to get along its unfortunate but its also a good thing at times. If everyone agreed on one thing all the time we would have a very boring world.

since we are talking about dumb questions and how they apparently don't really exist i have one for you guys.....i don't belong to any other blogs or forums or anything at all like this so i don't know exactly what you mean by ther terms "lurkers" and "trolls".....can anybody explain that to me....i know i should probably know this but i don't.....thanks guys.....and i have to say while i have only been a member of this forum for a little bit and have only been collecting coins for a year or two, i have found everyone on here to be overly friendly and helpful.

Lurker is just someone who reads but never participates. A troll is someone who is mean or disagreeable simply to start an argument. An example might be someone who posts avout every coin someone posts on here, "that is an ugly coin, not worth collecting".

A lurker is someone who read an internet forum, but rarely or never posts.

A troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community

Disagreements are fine but when the disagreement devolves to a credibility slam which surpasses the boundary or subject matter of the thread itself, its somethig all together different.

I understand that some folks feel the "need" to do this. I just do not understand why since it could make the poster feel like s/he is just wasting everybodies time.

The only time which truly gets wasted is the amount of time it takes to post the "non-reply".

I am new and I probably know nothing about coins compared to most posters here, but if I ever get roasted by someone on here, I'll be content knowing I was just dissed by someone on a coin collecting forum.

  11. I must bea lurker.

I go tobed rather early most of the time its before 8 oclock and am up at 3 or 4 in the morning.
I like to set and read the blogs you guys post and learn a lot from you.
I did post at times but now i dont because i feel most of you are in bed so i read and learn all i can and can tell you its hard on this old man to keep all i read inside this small head.
Thank you all for the infomation you give here for free and its helped me a lot.
Maybe what i ment to ask is being this kind of lurker a bad thing.

Doug, Me think's you protest to much. No one is, or shouldn't be blaming the moderators who are in fact doing an excellect job. As the post opened it was referring to talk-back or replies to questions wanting answers, not snide remarks from the experts. I respect your (volunteered) postion and I see no need for you to defend yourself and the other monitors of this fine forum.

No, I wouldn't call anyone with over 100 posts a lurker. Maybe an infrequent poster, but not a lurker.

Don't be worried about when you post. It maybe a few hours before someone reads it or, maybe an overseas member. We all have our own time frames we follow. Glad to see your post.

I have noticed this is as well. It sad that some of us here at CT feel the need to be rude to others. All a newcomer is trying to do most of the time is get some simple assistance on an issue bothering him or her. Negative comments is a black eye on all members here. It been mentioned earlier in this forum that "trouble" members should be dealt with by administrative members. I would love to see this materialize. This is supposed to be a fun & informative website for all levels of coin lovers. These lame members are jeopardizing all the positive aspects we can serve to any level of collector. I have seen the "attitudes" of certain forum posts take a negative & counter-productive direction, which is not the point of this website. It serves no purpose of anyone here to see negative posts/comments. This is an amazing hobby & is supposed to be enjoyable on all aspects(collecting, researching, internet, etc), so lets keep it that way! Like I said, these trouble posters should be confronted to keep the integrity of Coin Talk as a helpful & enjoyable as possible for all members.

I read plenty of threads but don't respond. but that does not mean I'm not learning something. I'm more of a listener than a talker.

    I'm new, so I don't have much to teach yet.I'm still a student.:hail:

Maybe off the subject but to me each forum has a different tempo.

The Paper Money forum is more laid back (in a good way).

The US Coin forum and Coin chat can be fun and comical. (in a good way)

And the Bullion investing forum is a little more fast paced. (in a good way) You will see some healthy debates in that forum.

But all are very informative and I enjoy them all. And I have learned to take everything with a grain of salt.

The problem you describe is something I've only noticed in recent weeks. There are a few people I don't remember posting before who are everywhere now and they can get pretty mean. I was kind of surprised that no one stepped in to stop it on some of them.

I used to work for a newspaper and I moderated our blog for about two years. We had one person in particular who single-handedly ruined it by trollish behavior. Unfortunately when I started as moderator I was too easy on him and let it get too far, and it never did get back to what it was. Internet forums tend to devolve to the lowest common denominator, and members and moderators have to constantly be vigilant to keep them civil and useful.

I agree and disagree with this thread. I think that posting disrespectful pics of emotions to a newbie is just disrespectful. Atleast we can point them in the right direction, and give them advice. No one should hold eachother's hand, but you shouldn't smack it back either. I also think that if you post multiple threads asking the same question, you deserve a smart alleck response. I mean, i was and still am a person that will disregard some of the posts that contain valuable information, no one is perfect. But the best advice for newbie's is to read everyone's post and head what they have to say.

i totaly agree with the topic starter.
I posted a simple question about bullion the other day and some responses from one guy are not the kind of responses i liked.
at first i tought it was a small joke or something.
But if someone keeps pusshing you down, then the fun off it all starts to fade away

As I said in a recent thread - If you have nothing nice to say ~ say nothing!

I also know what you mean by the statement "a dumb question" - that is what some people like to make you feel you asked. This is where Chris's point of it sometimes results in a dumb answer regardless of how smart the responding poster thought they were. Treat each other with respect and realize you may not understand what the OP was thinking or what drove them to ask the question in the 1st place.

This forum is for the members by the members - you make it what it is and you have the ability to report posts that cross over the line. You also have the ability to step in and say a better response would be... I do it occasionally and hope that the member that made a negative comment will take a minute to reflect on why I posted what I did. You (the members) have that same power. If that happens often enough, the negative posters will either learn from it or leave. As Doug said, it is a fine line we walk. We all try very hard to not abuse the power we are given.

What most members do not realize is how much is done without the members even realizing it.

It is a delicate balance and sometimes it is better that the members get a chance to work it out. Again, we do count on the members to help by reporting posts. We are not here to provide censorship but we do try very hard to keep things on track.

    Best Wishes ~ Darryl
