Hmmm, from that perspective anything is possible. Where did you acquire the coin? And don't say craigslist
i'm definitely not an expert on 1916 d fakes, but i've looked at a few that my local dealer had. this one definitely has my spider senses screaming fake. my gut reaction is this one isn't an added mint mark but a stamped forgery. i've seen enough mercury dimes to know this one isn't from the mint.
Yeah, you got me. I posted that when the OP hadn't posted the obverse pics and only had the reverse up. My typing was moving faster than my brain.
The rims on that thing are HUGE for the amount of wear showing, especially on the reverse. I'd say fake, but a pretty good one.
May I ask how many 16-D Mercs you've handled? My guess is that in your infinite experience and wisdom the answer is a whopping ZERO. As for the coin in question and taking the rough images into consideration, the best I can say is that it does not look "right". My gut says no. Proper images are necessary.
May I ask how many friends you have? My guess is that in your infinite friendliness and consideration, the answer is a whopping ZERO. Why would you insult pumpkinpie's comment, and then say the EXACT same thing?
Tell us more please. Here is a previous CT thread where the details of the 1916-D mintmark placement are described. Where did you get the coin? If you have it in hand, you can see if your coin matches either of the four known mintmark positions described. Please provide close-up photos of the mintmark & tell us more. http://www.cointalk.com/t101697/
Now after reading your other post(s) in this thread it is apparent that you do not have the coin to inspect it. I would not buy a raw 1916-D without it being slabbed by a major TPG or personally inspecting it in-hand. IMO it would be foolish to buy the coin solely based upon the photos posted.
Books, I am not getting you. On this thread http://www.cointalk.com/t199960/ you school me and others on how you can't make a call on photos and then you do the exact same. What is even more confusing is, I based my conclusion in the other thread on hard facts, yours was just a feeling that "it does not look right" What even makes it worse, is you are getting in Pumpkin's face for doing the exact same thing you just did. As Ricky Ricardo used to say "Lucy you got some 'splaining to do" (Appologies to anyone to young to get that reference) Mike
