It's not always black and white. The laws/acts requiring the government to purchase silver was a way to bail out the mining industry back in the 1890's! There was also lots of public debt and buying tons of silver and giving them a face value of a mere $1 was a form of government sanctioned inflation.

Not that different from today if you think about it...

Today I got one EL* $20 and one IF* $20 from the bank. Not a bad day. The bank also has some 1996 $100 *'s AU that I am waiting to grab when my budget calls for it.

 

Absolutely! It is always much more convoluted than first glance.

 

Very happy with this find at work. I know it's from a run of 3,200,000, but it's the lowest serial number on a bill I have.

I agree with Matt. It's almost a ladder, almost a radar,and almost uncirculated but definitely a low numbered star note and a great circulation find.

 

Man I've never come across any 4 digit serial number star notes. I heard somewhere that cash transport companies and some banks and such get all 4 digit or less star notes and sell them to collectors, so I'd imagine that this find of yours is pretty rare, for a circulation find. i pulled 3 * singles out of circulation yesterday, including a 2003A e00178530* (320k run).

 

Dang! I've pulled about 55 $1 stars out of circulation and I'm still waiting on my first 320,000 run. Only 9 of mine are 640,000 runs, and 3 are 1,280,000. The rest are 3,200,000 or more. I keep them all though, I enjoy the collecting.

Here are all my 640k or lower star print runs for my $1's circulation finds only:

640k * runs: (1) 2009 Chicago,(3) 2006 NY, (3) 2006 Atlanta's, & (2) 2006 SF's.

320k * runs: (2) 2003A Philadelphia, (1) 2003A Richmond (same as your run), & (1) 2003 Atlanta.

I do know that several of my $5, $10, and $20 stars are from 640k or lower runs. One I can think of off the top is 2004A NY $20 320k run.

 

in about the last 3 weeks of checking my teller drawers at the bank, i've recovered half a dozen 640k or lower run $1 stars, two 640k 20$ stars, and a 320k run $100 that i couldn't afford to keep

i also have about 3 dozen standard run $1 stars, a few $5's, a $10, and a couple $20's, all of which i have been able to afford to buy. so far, i haven't started keeping $50's or $100's yet. i figure that i'll collect the lower denomination bills as i can afford them, and i'll trade up when i find something worth trading for.

 

...........No $2's.
$5's: 2006 Boston 640k and 2003A Chicago 640k.
$10's: 2004A NY 640k and (10 CHCU consecutive) Chicago 512k.
$20's: (2) 2006 Atlanta 320k, 2004A NY 320k, (2 from each lower run) 2004 Chicago 640k, and 2004 Dallas.
No $50's.
No $100's.

 

i don't have any $2's either, but we very rarely have any on hand here. every once in awhile we'll have a customer that will order a couple hundred or so, and we'll occasionally get some in from customers. but i've yet to find any that are stars.

 

I got 108 star notes today from the bank 15 were 640,000 or less 1 was real nice 1999 and also a 2006 L00108108*. The serial number looked cool so I am gonna hang on to it. I probably have well over 100 that are 640,000 or less I generally don't keep the ones that are over that unless they have cool serials or are older like the 90's. In will keep UNC sequential SN's when I can get them I think I have about 25 in runs of 4 or more but nothing with low minting. I also found 2 2009 B's that had mismatched SN's but I sold them as soon as i found them, found them six months apart to the day. Straps Stars and Rolls are fun. I work for retailer so I get about 4 to 8 wheat pennies a day, not much silver tho.

 

@Wacky1980 I have pulled out $2 stars, just not 640k or less. I at once pulled out 3 2003 Minneapolis $2 stars out of one single strap of $2's.

@Kent Your L000108108* is not only a nice repeater, but from the lower SF print run of 640k. It was also the first run of stars to be printed for series 2006. Nice catch! Did you keep all of the 108 stars?

 

I have all of them right now I just doubt I hang on to the higher mintage ones. I seldom keep any over 640K. I need to get photos of some that I have most are very circulated in the 640K or less range I just keep them because they are harder to find.

 

well i just bought the 2009 ASE for 25 bucks! Score!

 

Found this '04A Boston star, today at the bank. It's pretty circulated, and from a run of 3.2 mil, so not sure if I'm going to keep it.

 

I have one example of '04A GA*. It is slightly less condition than yours. I keep all stars anyways, so I kept it.
