So today, I decided to call a few banks to see if they had any halves. I hadn't had much luck in the past with halves, but I figured that I'd give them another shot. The first bank I went to had $40 rolled. I got those, looked at them in the car, and they were all straight 74's. Yuck. So I went to the next bank, and they had $170 worth. I traded in my $40 and bought the rest. I got in the car and opened one roll... and needless to say freaked out. Almost every roll was like this, with only 2/17 rolls containing NO silver. One of the later rolls read "NEW" on the side of it, but it contained all 40% silvers! After searching through all of them, I ended up with: 63 90% silvers (one Frankie - my first!!!) 73 40% silvers I'm absolutely thrilled as this is my biggest find ever, and I had never found a 90% silver half until today.
dam thats awesome congratulations on that huge fined the best silver iv ever found at a bank was 1 1964 quarter and half dolor haha
Thanks everyone! Now... would you guys sell these given the price of silver? IF so, where? Or hang on to them?
If it was me who found them I honestly would keep them unless I really needed the money. I am not sure where the best place would be to sell them, but since they are just common silver halves I would either sell them on Ebay(which will take about 12% off the total purchase from fees), a local coin shop(if their buying at a competitive prices), or I might even try craigslist(be careful with this option though make sure to meet in a public place and not at someones house). Like I said though there might be better ways of selling these.
I would either sell them and buy coins you collect with the profit or hold on to them if you think silver might rise in the future. If you don't already have some silver, this would be a great addition to your collection.
well, current melt is (about) $935 for the 90%'ers and $442 for the 40%'ers $1377 melt! Great deal. COngrats.
Good for you, wish I lived in that area. The only thing you'll get in a Sacramento bank is a look of shock, confusion or irritation.
I had a find like that back in March, and I found three Walkers too. Since then the silver supply has virtually dried up in Halves - only 8 40% in the whole of my area since then. I am even visiting banks out of town on my various business excursions and turning up nothing but Ikes, occasional proof Halves, a few of the released only in mint set halves and lots and lots of old nickels.
congratulations! seriously amazing. thanks for posting this with the great pictures. great to see that this is possible and that the silver is still out there. personally I would sell the 40%, the 90% alone are a great investment.
Thats it I'm moving to florida and chillin with you. Let me just hit the post office to get back the stuff I mailed you and I'll deliver in person.
Wow awesome finds-congrats!! If keep some toward building a set which would be an investment, but sell any that are poorer condition ones, but then I'm broke lol! Either way, you've given me hope to keep going
I would pull the best looking ones to keep, and sell the rest. Even in the best case scenario for silver, it goes to $80 after the elections, but that's the top. Bottom will be $22. Final value will be around $30. Think of it this way, you can sell the ugly ones for their silver content, and for a few bucks more, you can buy MS-63 versions of better coins.
Exactly what I do, I sell the 40% and keep the 90% for my reserve. I use the proceeds from the 40% sales to buy up more coins to search, usually nickels - and keep re-circulating the funds. I actually have better luck finding silver in the nickel rolls though - usually daily.
