Hi, I am VERY new at this and I picked up my first Morgan and am looking for any suggestions as to its grade and anything else observed. Thank you !!!
I'm thnking the obverse scratches will limit it to MS62. Question: If you didn't have any idea what it would grade and you don't have any idea what it is worth, how did you determine what you would pay for it? Chris
Assuming luster and not haze on the coin then I would go 63. Then again it would depend on the amount of luster and hits - neither of which I get a real good feel for with this coin.
I am wondering the same thing. Was this a gift, or part of a collection given to you? Or did you have a general idea and are just looking for a reassuring grade from others? Oh, and it looks like a 62 to me.
I'm thinking it is AU I think I see rub on the ear and just above on the obverse. Also the central area of the reverse shows the same.
I am not experienced with grading coins and I basically just use my own scale to determine what shape a coin is in and make a guess. I would consider that coin AU unless proven otherwise like I do with many coins listed as BU. That way there is an upside if it is better than that and I don't overpay for an AU coin.
Hey Chris, Ive been trying to do my homework before hand, I was thinking 62-63 when I bought it, I paid 48 for it today. Thanks for the responses. Also as a newcomer it is impossible for me to try and distinguish between AU58 and MS60. I dont know if just buying slabbed coins is the way to go, I'm kind of thinking it is.
Actually I believe if you know what you are doing there are still some nice morgans out there that might be worth the grade. As it is to tell the difference between an AU58 type coin and a low MS coin can be difficult - you have to catch the slight rub on some of the high points. As it is if you like morgans and want MS graded coins then buy them already slabbed. I believe there are plent available. Just my humble opinion.
My deal is why pay graded price if it's not graded. I have almost a complete set of AU Morgans and I bet the submitters thought they were MS coins when they submitted them. But I am a Everyman type of collector these days.
AU55: Slight wear of the hair detail above the forehead and wear on the lower portion of the ear. Wear on the Eagles breast and/or weak strike in this area as well.
It's not. Save your money. That's a very hard call to make, to begin with. Check out this coin against the graded MS counterparts in the online auctions, looking for signs of wear. Heritage, Teletrade, eBay. Ideally, you want another slabbed 1904-O, as this Mint is notorious for weak strikes. You'll learn a lot more that way, and you'll fine-tune your skills in the process. Understand, I'm not saying the TPGs don't have their uses. I'm saying, why pay them, when you can see it for free?
I don't know much about the strikes and such for these, but I see a couple flat spots in the hair and on the reverse breast. AU-55
