I need some help. A person on another forum found a 2000 d dime. he thinks it is a mint error. i can find no evidence that it is a mint error. i will post images below.

i would like to help him out because he thinks he has a big find.

the edge of the dime is smooth no reeded edges.

you can click on the pictures for a zoom.

i can find only one other person that has found something similar and the conclusion is that it has been plated.
has anyone else seen or heard of anything like this?

i just read a thread below could this be a dryer coin?

Definitely appears to be some kind of fake item. What is the weight, and is it attracted to a magnet?
Font on reverse is wrong for a genuine US dime, and reverse is very crude in appearance.
I can't tell you what it is, just what it isn't. A Dime. Sorry.
I know you've been trying to get info on this a lot of places for a while, and you have more than one. How many do you have?

I'll post it here with the color removed. I assume the color is just from the lighting?

Well it isn't mine it is someone else and they have been posting it everywhere. you guys are the largest group of error collectors that i know of and i tried to tell him that it was fake.

he doesn't think that it is, but there are some major problems with the coin that leads me and others to believe that it is not real.

i just wanted to get other support and let him know.

    I wonder if it's a dryer coin?

i was thinking that but it is the font on the reverse that has me bothered. a dryer coin would explain the rest of the damage but not the font.
according to the owner of the coin there is no clad on it. is it solid silver all the way though which makes me more suspect.

as far as i know dime's are not stamped in silver. older ones were but this is a new one.

wonder if it is aluminum or something like that and someone tried to make a coin out of it with a press?

Weight would help in the determination.

The whole overall coin looks to be counterfeit, so it's not even worth discussing PMD or Genuine Mint Error. :(

Obviously counterfeit. But who would waste money to fake a dime? Maybe just an amateur counterfeiter experimenting?

It's a pretty bad fake. I wonder if it is a game piece.

not sure. it is one of those wierd things that people find.

I think all of you on this thread may be wrong about this coin being a fake. It looks to me like it is a art work piece that someone started and gave up on it. A real coin is used to make the art work pieces and sometimes awesome pieces of handmade artwork can be found on coins and sell for big prices . I like some of the older and better done Hobo artwork pieces myself .

Oops I just thought of something else. Maybe this coin was made with a filled in or what I call a clogged die. this would make it look this way also. I have found them before with the torch area looking this way but never kept any of them.

Stop trolling. The font on the letters is not even close to the real thing.

I'm new to this site. I have a dime just like the one pictured. I'm in NYC and got it in my change one day. I am going nuts on trying to find info on this. Any help ???? contact happybill@aol.com

  18. Sorry Bill, but it's not real. It's a play coin of sorts, probably from a kid's toy. And you probably shouldn't post your email address in your post, we'll reply to the thread just like I am right now :)
