Now that you have a bunch of these coins, maybe you should consider a World Coin catalog like a Krause publication or pick up a magazine with the info you need.

This is far from complete for Mexican silver coinage but I put some figures here (for One Peso coins) that I got from Coin World > World Coins:

Mexico has made some silver coins after 1964 but not many!! I think 64 is the last silver year for all countries but that's just my guess. Wait for a silver expert to correct me!! :D

Hi All, Mexico made the 25 Peso coin in 1972 and the 100 Peso coin from 1977 - 1979. They are both .720 silver.

That's "un" Peso, not "uno" Peso. :smile

I really hope you didn't pay silver prices for cu-ni coins. :(

Oh no.. I Bought about 30 Silver Merc/Roosevelt Dimes a Pile of Wheats (about 100) and 2 Morgans (1921 and 1902) and a Sunshine Mint .999 oz from 1983 and 16 Silver Quarters .. All for 100.00 and they threw in about 30 of these Mexico coins..

All and all I thought was a GREAT deal.. But so far have found that one of the Dimes was a 1834 Large date Capped Bust and one of the Wheats is a 1864 Token (Crossed Cannon)... So I am very happy.. I just thought what a extra bonus if these were silver...

    Hi Lather.

It sounds like you got a good deal on all those coins, and even more so now with the much increased price of silver.

As for your Mexico pesos, if you post a photo of them, I can probably find the particular coins in my Mexico catalog to let you know what they are made of. If you're still interested.

    Thanks.

do all mexico coins have the purity stamped on them if they contain silver?

Silver content stamped on some Mexico coins

Unfortunately, no, not all Mexico coins have the purity stamped on them.

The very earliest coins are all 90% but are not usually noted on the coin. Then, around 1905, they lowered the silver content to 80%, but again most coins do not note that. Around 1919, the silver content was again lowered, this time to 72%, and again, the coins do not say so. After World War II, in either 1946 or 1947, the silver content was lowered yet again for many coins, but not for all coins.

Some coins after 1946 are 50%, some are 30%, and some are 10% silver. And just to throw a wrench into the works, some commemorative coins contain 90% or even pure silver.

Most of the time you have to know which coins have which level of silver content, but occasionally, the coins will have the silver content stamped into them as "ley" (means "law"), and occasionally it will also include the weight of the coin. Some coins even go so far as to tell you the number of "gramos" (grams) of "plata pura" (pure silver) that the coin contains.

And the last couple. 1 peso 1957 & 1962. Silver .100. It was the last silver Mexican pesos for an appeal.
