1989 "D" Dime... but a goldish/brass color? (pics)

    It's just a gold plated dime. The fact that their are several out there means that whoever did it either did a lot of them.. or it's a coincidence.

    thats what i figured, just thought it was odd that ive come across more of the same date and mint lol thanks!

    if ppl would only do a little research......Sprint phone company had several hundred dollars worth of the '89 dimes gold plated and dumped on the market as a promo contest for their "dime a minute" cell phone plan. The first one to call in and have their dime verified won 25 grand, and free long distance. Ppl, plz do research first before rambling on in ignorance.

    Didn't really see any 'rambling' before the first post of a new member. Good info though, I didn't know about the Sprint dimes.

    was that leagal for them to do that? in the uk defacing a coin is still technically considered treason

    Yeah, unfortunately in the U.S. it is basically legal to do anything to a coin. The only exception is if it is done with the intent to defraud. In fact, I believe it is still illegal to destroy a US coin. However, people melt coins everyday and nobody cares. I know it is illegal to hoard and melt pre-1982 cents specifically, but most coin laws in the US go un-enforced in my opinion.
