I bought this hobo nickel at a coin show today............

I paid $8.00 for it. The buffalo nickel that the artwork was carved on does not appear to be in the greatest shape and that is why it looks "dark" in the picture. These are the best pictures that I took of it.

I found these two hobo nickels (see post # 19 & post # 21) at two dealer tables at a coin show this weekend. I went to the coin show yesterday and found one dealer selling them for various prices and I bought one hobo nickel from him (post # 19). Today I found the hobo nickel on post # 21 at a second dealer table that was in a different area of the coin show venue. I missed that table yesterday but I came back today to find that this dealer table was selling hobo nickels for $8.00 each. $8.00 was the lowest price that I paid for a hobo nickel.

I have been carving nickels for about four years now. Thats what got me intrested in coin collecting. I guess for most people its the other way around. Ive been lurking around this forum for a while trying to get a better idea of what collectors look for in coins and what I should be looking for. I've seen some cool stuff. I like the ancients a lot. Anyways, heres a couple of my carvings. I sell mostly on ebay. [IMG][IMG][IMG]John Schipp

I always look for Hobo nickels at the shows but the prices and quality are all over the place. The ones posted in this thread are very nice and the prices much more reasonable then I've been seeing.

most of the ones on e-bay are just done to fool people out of their money.
then you have real carvers likebillzach.

I bought hobo nickels on ebay in the recent past and I just wanted to state for the record that I do not feel that I got fooled out of my money because 1.) I like the artwork on some of the ones that I have seen on ebay and 2.) I already knew that they were not original hobo nickels.

Most of the hobo nickels on ebay appear to be "modern" hobo nickels. A lot of the hobo nickels that I bought off of ebay were done by the artist named J. Press. J. Press is considered to be a modern hobo nickel artist. All of my hobo nickels in my collection are "modern" Hobo Nickels. I could not afford to buy an original Hobo nickel. Even if I was able to afford to spend $100's (even $1000's) of dollars on orignal hobo nickels, I would not do it because I do not want to spend that much money on a hobo nickel. I guess I am a cheapskate. :)

    Thanks 9roswell and Silverart.

There are some people on ebay trying to fool people or rip people off as there is in anything that can make a person money. But I am friends with and have talked with many of the modern carvers that regularly post there work on ebay. I think you will mostly find a friendly creative bunch of guys n gals that enjoy sharing there hobbie with people that appreciate it. I am a jeweler first but engraving is my passion and i love to draw. I get to combine my passions and talents into an object that people want to own. For me hobo nickels are the best not to mention I have become friends with a number of collectors, some very great folks. I even have collectors send me ideas for coins they would like to see.

This is by no means a complete list. But these folks are pretty actively carving hobos at present. I respect and enjoy there work.

I suggest typing "hobo nickel" insearch bar on ebay. Theres uasually about 150-200 results both modern and classic. Check out the OHNS website at hobonickels.org there is tons of info there on classic and modern carvers.

Warning its both fun and addictive.

I bought this guidebook on Amazon and it has a lot of information in it on Hobo Nickels.

Amazon might have another one of these hobo nickel price guides. There might also be one on ebay but you just have to look for it. I think that you can also order from the OHNS website if I am not mistaken.

It is a "Dog" Hobo nickel that was created by Keith Pedersen. I paid $36.00 for it. The reverse side (buffalo side) was carved out instead of the front side (Indian). The "KP" on the "dog tag" stands for Keith Pedersen.
