I have tried without success to identify it. I think it may be some form of proto-money as the character Shi (10) appears between the holes. The piece is 25x16mm and weighs 2.9g. Reverse... The coins are from an estate, and there are about 200 of them. The date range is from the mid/early 1800s - the 1950s. One of my problems is that on most of the coins, I cannot even determine the country of origin. It's not that the condition of the coins is so poor that they can't be read, but rather they are in a language I can't read.

So here's what I'm looking for. I'm looking for a source (or sources) that indexes coins by countries, and gives some sort of value to them. The source can either be online or in print. However, it is necessary that there be pictures in the source material, so that I can be sure of what I'm looking at. Free sources are best, but I'm open to other options.

From my experience, I'm prepared to learn that most have little to no value. But, legally I have to be able to identify them to make that sort of determination.

I recently purchased two 1921 Columbia Leprosy Colony 50 Centavo coins. One type has a star at the top of the reverse & the other is without the star. Does anyone know if there is significance to this?

The past several years I've been following the hyperinflation in Zimbabwe with a fascinated horror. That got me thinking as I get back into coin collecting that it might be interested to create a 'type' collection of money from economies which have suffered hyperinflation - zimbabwe, brazil, germany, etc. as a personal reminder of what "money" is...

Just curious if anyone else out there has done this, and if so, if you have any pointers for information, dealers, etc. since I'm not familiar with non-US collecting.

We visited a coin show in East Haven Connecticut and found these two coins in a ½ price bargain box. We had to look through a thousand coins to find these two but it was fun.

The first coin is an 1853 Medio Centavo (half Centavo) from Chile. I had not seen one of these in this nice condition before so I grabbed it. All these 1851 & 1853 issued in copper were manufactured in England & the United States. The Krause catalog value is $20 in EF.

The second coin is a 50 Centavo from the Philippines dated 1958. This coin is high MS grade & beautifully toned. The Krause catalog value is $1.50 in BU.
