Humble advice from an avid collector amongst you all….

I have seen in a span of different threads that much of our ‘family’ here at Cointalk doesn’t carry cash to make their purchase and only use their debit cards or what-have-you. I personally feel like you are cutting yourself short. I purposely go out of my way to make sure I complete every transaction in cash. I even go so far to pay for $20.01 when putting gas in my car to get the .99 cents back in change. Or I will drive 5 miles to my bank to get cash or hit a local ATM. Why go to such extreme measures? Well, to get coins of course!

For instance every time I go to the bank - about twice a week - and pull out the funds needed to complete my transactions, I ask if they have anything brand new or old. Sometimes they hand me crisp uncirculated notes I can check for errors/stars or a handful of half dollar rolls that a customer just left. Sometimes, I even get so lucky as to have them hand me silver, Ikes, or red seal notes for face value! Once they get to know you by name and know what you look for they seem to keep an eye out for you. Of course, sometimes a box of donuts can encourage this for them all the more!

So, now that you have your cash, what if you don’t have enough to cover a purchase? Well, I have become a master at this art. Most venues will accept multiple payment methods. So, if your total is $26.67 you can put $20 on your card and pay the rest in cash. Then it’s simple to just hand over a $10 bill to see what they may have in their register! I can make $100 in cash last all week at times with this method.
It’s a shame how many coin collectors aren’t even curious to see what’s in people’s registers. To me it’s a whole box of secrets! Sometimes, people will set old stuff in a separate slot and you can see it right when it opens. Then it’s easy to ask if you can buy it or if they are a collector as well. Then you can strike up a conversation and have yourself a trading buddy! Or - if nothing else - you might get handed back a silver dime in change. (Just happened to me a few weeks ago at Dollar General when my wife sent me out for dish soap. My total was $2.17 so essentially my soap was free!) Every time I go into my local grocery store one of the cashiers now complains about her husband’s coin addiction and guess who’s accompanying me to the next coin auction. :D

So I know you’ve read all this and you’re thinking: “ Come on guy, get to the point…Sounds like a lot of work for little reward…. “ But here’s the thing. Whether it’s a silver dime at Dollar General, a 1914 Wheat Cent at Taco Bell, pre-1982 copper cents, pre-1960 nickels, old notes or what-have-you, it all adds up and if you sell your finds then essentially it’s free money!

In closing, I leave you with one more experience: I went to that dreaded store called Wal-Mart to pick up diapers and baby wipes. I think my total was in the neighborhood of $82.69 or something like that. I always try to get out of that place as quick as possible, hence my dash toward the self check-out. I have acquired a wheat or two from these blasted machines every now and then (I also figured less hands pilfering for the goodies!) So, I check my cash and I only had four bucks. So I used my debit card for $80 and slapped in $3. Ching Ching Ching! as the coins hit the dispenser. Music to my ears…. I scoop them up, grab the diapers and wipes and fly out of there… And here is what was in the little lovely pile of change:

Looking at ebay, most morgans are bringing $30, and that's what most dealers are asking.

It seems as if the bullion price of silver dollars and the collectible value of silver dollars has split.

It seems as if the last silver price increased raised a threshold for them, and now it's not coming back down.

If silver drops to $15, a Morgan dollar will have $11.60 worth of silver. Will morgan dollars still be $30?

Well the biggest and most disturbing thing I heard Bernanke say was that QE will continue until unemployment reaches 7 percent, supposedly it's at 7.6 percent right now. After his Tues. and today speeches or diatribes the stock market took a bit of a nose dive but I don't have to tell y'all anything as most of y'all are up to par with the news of the day anyways. See below. I'm not trying to start a gloom and doom thread or anything but what is this QE gonna lead to when inflation finally hits the fan? In 2016 we will get a new Prez and then what? Are we gonna hit another recession because the gov't has pushed QE3 forward with absolutely nothing to pay for it? Certainly plenty of food for thought, QE3, what an insane idea that is!!! All I can say is hold onto your gold and guns cause once inflation hits us all, we will be in a world of hurt!

Here’s everything you need to know about Bernanke’s press conference today

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/...ss-conference/
There hasn’t been much news in the chairman’s statement until just now. Bernanke said that the FOMC expects to continue buying bonds — holding to its quantitative easing policies — until the unemployment rate falls to 7 percent, which it expects will happen next year. The U.S. unemployment rate is currently 7.6 percent.

The pic isn't all that great but to see it with the naked eye you can tell. Does that make it an error or just ugly?

Saw this on eBay and decided to gamble on it. Seller's pictures are below. These Franklins are part of a complete 1963 mint set being sold still sealed in its original cellophane. Think it would/will hit a FBL grade with PCGS? I'm 99% sure that the '63-D (first picture) is FBL and am not sure about the '63-P, since TPG's seem to be more lenient on the FBL for tougher dates, such as the P mints for '61-'63. Thoughts?<img style="max-width: 500px; cursor: pointer;" onclick="window.open(this.src)" border="0" alt="Click here to enlarge" src="http://www.cointalk.com/attachments/269764d1371695041t-t2ec16fhjhyffkttyygubrwlmfduhw-60_57.jpg" border="0" alt="Click image for larger version.

I thought this was going to be a small collection...

I decided to collect large silver coins (~1 oz) with Elizabeth wearing the The King George IV State Diadem

In most countries that QEII is the monarch, that would mean coins in the late 1980s and 1990s. I particularly wanted to concentrate on 1990, since I also have a Victoria collection from 1890.

Starting with the obvious countries, Great Britain, Canada, and Australia, I started running across odd countries that I didn't expect, and in some cases I had never heard of.

Next was Alderney (just happened to find this one out of the blue) and Fiji.

This is what I have so far:

Top row: Alderney, Australia, and Canada
Bottom row: Fiji, Great Britain, and the Slave Queen from the Silver Bullet Silver Shield series.

This project has turned out like an onion...
I keep peeling back the layers only to find more layers. I had no idea Lizzie was queen of so many countries. Eizabeth II Queen of Gibraltar??? Really??? Apparently so.

Here are the countries (and British Overseas Territories, and Baliwicks  ) I have found so far that have that particular portrait on their coins:

St Helena
Bahamas
Bermuda
Baliwick of Jersey
Baliwick of Guernsey
Isle of Man
Cayman Islands
Cook Islands
Tuvalu
Gibraltar
Niue
New Zealand
Solomon Islands
Falkland Islands
St Lucia (1985)
British Virgin Islands

Yikes! I keep finding more every day!
