Greetings CT Members,

I'm looking to possibly get some tips and insight from everyone regarding slab photography as I believe it's a tricky subject. I do well with my imaging but not good enough. I guess you could say it's not up to my standards..lol. I just ordered what I believe to be the greatest photography book of all time, "Numismatic Photography" by Mark Goodman so hopefully that will help out a lot. In the meantime, I would appreciate any tips or suggestions from my fellow CT members. I will be posting my images along the way for everyone to view.

Please feel free to post any Numismatic Photography link you know of.

Merlin I need your assistance to as you are my Numismatic Photography mentor.

Here's an example of my current slab photography, not the best but I try.

I am trying to collect a wide variety of coins made of copper alloys. This has not been easy to research because the world coin guide I use does not give exact compositions, just the general name such as "Brass", "Nickel Brass", "Copper Nickel", etc. Wikipedia has been my best resource, although coin composition information there is sporadic, available mostly for the largest countries. Does anyone have a good source for this information? Does anyone have any additions for my list? There are a lot of duplicate alloys available, and I am mainly looking for one good example of each individual alloy.
Here is what I have found so far (no guarantees of correctness):

Once I saw in a numismatic shop a lot of mixed Swiss coins for just 5€. I asked the seller if I could open it and buy only the dates I needed (I don't collect Swiss coins by date but I saw some silver through the plastic bag :D). Initially he wanted me to buy the whole lot but then he allowed me to open it. I picked 2 silver 1-franc (including a 1913), 3 silver half-franc and a non-silver 5 francs. He said: "6 coins, 0,20€ each, 1,20€ in total". :D
I kept 1 franc and 1/2 franc for my collection, sold the other 3 silver coins on E-Bay for 5€ and exchanged the 5fr coin with a friend that was departing to Switzerland (4€)!
I also picked up 6 US silver quarters, 3 US silver dimes (including a 1941 Mercury), 3 Canadian silver 10 cents (including a 1943 King George), a silver Canadian 25 cents, 2 50% silver British one shilling and almost a dozen of old Asian and African silver coins, all from mixed bags of worthless world coins of few cents each. Some I kept, other I sold.

I was exchanging old Italian coins with another collector. I offered a 1961 commemorative of the unification 500 lire in exchange of a 1949 2 lire. He told me it wasn't fair because my coin was silver and his was aluminium. I replied there was no problem, I just needed that coin. Well, my silver coin was only worth melt (7€ back then) and his aluminium coin (rare date and high grade) around 30€!

And I found some pre-unification (late 1700s - early 1800s) Italian coins in mixed lots for 50 cents each.

In a lot of old Italian coins I inherited from my grandparents there was also the ultra-rare 1946 1 lira (100,000 pieces minted, worth 100€ even circulated).

Have you some similar stories to tell?

Ok.... I couldn't help it, I bought an 1889-cc Morgan, not the prettiest coin, but from what I understand a great coin. I don't like to spend huge amounts of money on stuff like this, but given the history I took a chance.

This thing probably will grade G4 im guessing. I had it looked it and was told that just because of what it is, paying to have it sent to PCGS, even if just for authentication is worth it.

I'm probably going to flip this thing...and have already been offered a little profit on it. (I paid $350) for it. Some might keep this coin and be happy with it, to me it's another Morgan Dollar I can turn into other coins I might like. I wish I had more of a passion for Morgans but I just dont. Its a beautiful coin (the Morgan in general) and I have all the respect and admiration for what is.

Either way it's my latest aquisition... and i'm honored to own it either way.

Thanks for the input.<img style="max-width: 500px; cursor: pointer;" onclick="window.open(this.src)" border="0" alt="Click here to enlarge" src="http://www.cointalk.com/attachments/264328d1369382042t-pict1237.jpg" border="0" alt="Click image for larger version.

Well after much anticipation, they're back! All things considered, im a happy camper. Could have been worse, could have been better.

My 1854 type II Indian head dollar came back MS-62 which was better than expected.

My 1927 Quarter Indian came back MS-63 which was a grade lower than expected.

One more point on the 1854 and it would have REALLY hit paydirt. The Indian head quarter eagle needed to hit MS-66 to see huge money.

Either way im happy and grateful, and hope that we can all make hits like this every now and then. This is what makes this hobby so much fun. Both coins have been accounted for and will be turned over to their new owner...why you might ask.....

I'm more into light numismatics and raw coins....stuff I can feel and touch. I will tho....always take a chance on something if it means I can make a buck. A buck I can spend on buying more coins. :D
I like variety coins, and say I had a good DD quarter, I want it varified for the type of DD and yada yada, what can I expect to pay? I ask not only for future reference, but also because (back to the ebay topic) I see many graded coins on there. I have seen nice errors, graded, selling for $5....which would make no sense if they paid $50 to get it graded.... I hope I am making sense, I'm getting sleepy and my thoughts are not coming together as fluently...thanks in advance ya'll :thumb:

I was searching for a coin show to go to this weekend (or next) and ran across this (http://www.ebwpromotions.com/portland/index.html) article. It is unfortunate that the city feels this way about a coin show.

What exactly are the issues? I guess the city is trying to protect its citizens?

I have only seen one 1959 Krona a few years back in a PCGS holder but sold on ebay for $138.00 bucks by a dealer on the west coast that seems to sell every thing on ebay for hugh amounts of money.....very fishy if you ask me.
2. There is now a "canadian redbook". Is it any good?

3. A good book on grading us coins, but more specifically, reading material on how to examine a coin to tell if its uncirculated.

4. A general book on collecting ancients, with some identification included. Unless I know otherwise, there isn't a one-for-all book on ancient id'ing is there?

5. I need some flips for a bunch of loose coins I have. Are Cowen's brand flips any good?

Thanks.

Out of boredom, I was thinking of wrapping some of my commemeratives and ASE proofs that are in mint boxes in zip-loc sandwich bags. Will this do anything other than kill time?
