My earlier thread about the 140X bid Morgan Dollar got me to thinking about the quality of coin photos that coin dealers and auctioneers use. I collect rainbow toned coins and the quality of the photo is of supreme importance, yet I find dealer after dealer with absolutely terrible photos on their websites. The large auction houses are just as bad. Although the quality of Heritage's photo's have improved over the last two years, they still are far from good IMO.

Has anyone ever purchased or won a coin at auction that absolutely blew them away when the received the coin in the mail. If you have, here is your chance to show your good fortune to the rest of the numismatic community.

Please post a coin that looks ...

From time to time we see references to the Sheldon 70 point grading scale when talking about the grading system that is currently being used in Numismatics today. For the benefit of those who are not familiar with what Dr. Sheldon did and why he did it, I’d like to offer a short summary.

William H. Sheldon was born in 1898. He first became interested in Early Large Cents at a young age while looking through his Fathers cigar box full of those big old coppers. By the time he was a teenager, he was pricing Early Large Cents for a local dealer and according to him, using a 70 point system. As the years went by he became quite the aficionado of Early Large Cents (those from 1793 through 1814). On three different occasions he assembled ...

Feel free to let me know if you read it and find glaring errors. I am not a very good writer and I write these fast without another to edit them so I am sure there are errors. I dont usually post these but I just found this coin, and the ideas expressed on it, fascinating and felt the need to pass it on. The main purpose is to document the coin and offer as much information possible while keeping it brief.

I also need a bit of help. There is one last ...

I know we have been over this bridge a million times, but recent comments by someone here have made me think about this whole market grading vs. technical grading thing and although I have tried to explain my point of view in the past, I don't think that I have done so well enough to make the point clearly as it is in my mind.

My point of view is that there are 2 schools of thought developing in numismatics lately. I am going to focus on the technical graders, because that is the side I think I fall to.

To a collector, there is less of a difference in opinions when a coin is technically graded (either detail is there or not) than any other way. There are STILL going to be differing opinions!!! It is a ...

Within each of your respective collections, there is undoubtedly coins of great value and beauty. But, I would imagine that everyone of us also has a coin (or coins) that we have acquired over the years (or decades) that have a special story that is worth a greater value to the owner of the coin than it could ever fetch if listed for sale.

I thought it would be fun to share some of those stories...so here is one of mine.

I first began collecting coins when I was in the 6th grade or so, that would have been around 1996. Not long after I started collecting, I found this little coin shop called "Al's Stamps and Coins." It was a smaller shop owned by an older gentleman (Al) who was semi-retired and used ...

A big thank you to Haleiwa for directions to the CC Mint. Was only able to spend about a half hour there as the kids were extremely anxious to reach our final destination. Well worth the $5 it cost to go in!!! Just South of Reno, Nevada the mint is towards the south end of town right on the main street (HW-395) and across from the Golden Nugget (how appropo). Took many pictures and a few pictures here which I hope are okay to post. Bought a little something and I though there would be no collecting this trip. Quite honestly I didn't realize I would be driving right past it on our way to the mountains so bad planning on my part! I could have spent a few hours there as there was more to see than just the mint. The museum goes into mining, ...

    To All Members,
One problem that CoinTalk has, which puts an excessive amount of stress on our servers, is a growing number of people with incorrect or outdated email addresses in their profile. Some of you probably don't know that your settings allows you to change your email address and setup what type of notifications you wish to receive. Please double check in the settings to make sure these are setup as you wish them to be.

With the easy access to free email systems, there's no reason for anyone to register here with a false email. At some point in the not-too distant future, I will be running a program which will identify accounts setup with false email addresses and those accounts will be locked until the email addresses are updated.
